If it is 10 Grand in U.S. dollars I think the rate is 6.7 now. It's something around that number.   Maybe around 70 thousand yuan would equal around 10 grand.

The rate of exchange for cash at Bank of China today is 6.24 yuan per US dollar if you bring it in cash, or have it deposited at a local bank.  If in the States, and you wire transfer it into China, and to your account at a local bank, the rate of exchange of an electronic transfer (when received it) today is 6.29 Rmb per US dollar.

In order to decide to exchange or not, you must decide in your mind if you will ever need that money in China.  If the answer is yes, then do exchange currencies ASAP, because the Rmb is appreciating in value.  It has done so for the last few years (from 8.39 to now 6.24), and will continue to do so for the near future, so the longer you wait, the less renmembi you will get.
