Translation usually pays by the character when doing Chinese to English/Other language.
In the US, average rates run about $0.20 a word/character , Europe about €0.15 per word/character on average if done in those locations. These are rates from European class (German, French, Dutch, Italian, English, etc.) languages to Asian class (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc.) and vice-versa, but because English is so common, it's sometimes slightly cheaper. There are of course much cheaper rates in China. I've seen as low as $0.05, but the average here (for Chinese to English) seems to be about $0.10-$0.12. For Chinese to English there are also considerations to take as sometimes 3 characters can make 1 English word or 2 English words can be represented by a different amount of characters
It also depends on what you are going to be translating. Academic works, entertainment (movies, video games, etc) that use a lot of slang or specific types of terms and/or need to be "localized" can run higher: I've heard of as high as $0.25.
PLEASE NOTE: These are freelancer rates, not company rates. Companies usually have different rates, so you'd need to contact them individually and work out a deal. Large projects (like books) will also run at cheaper rates (due to many repeat words) and because they would be ridiculously expensive to do if they didn't run at lower rates.
I do freelance trans/loc work (not full time) so if you have any specific questions or are just looking to get into it to make some money (or you need someone to do some work ), please feel free to send me a message.

Good answer. I applied for some company found on echinacities job database and actually did 1 work (300 words only but very difficult topic) from German to English. After that I found that the payment of 100 RMB for 1000 words is ridiculous. The company praised my work though so I asked for higher payment twice but got rejected. Finally I decided to quit (like walking away at some fake market) but didnt help much neither. I got paid for my work which was 30 RMB lol... Would be great If you could hook me up with some serious company... Thanks in advance. Cheers
