Q: How much do you pay for gym membership in Beijing?

I paid 4500 RMB for my gym membership last year and it's about to expire. Obviously this year the prices have gone up to almost 6000 RMB which I am NOT willing to pay. Have prices gone through the roof in Beijing over the years or is my gym just exceptionally expensive (it's got a fancy swimming pool).

If you're talking about upscale international gyms with many foreign patrons, then 6000 isn't even that insane. I know people who pay over 8000 for theirs. Having said that, there are much cheaper options out there too. Domestic chains like Jinhao are quite inexpensive especially if you find one in a less affluent part of town. Or you could just buy a yoga mat, weights and skipping rope on taobao for under 200 RMB and work out yourself at home. That's what I'm thinking of doing. You can even buy a cheap fitness exercise and viola, you'll probably see better results in no time. I've also heard that Heyrobics is a really fun and inexpensive way to get fit. Anyone can join their weekly classes for 30 rmb a pop. There are plenty of options out there that don't require paying a large chunk of your monthly pay check. You just have to be somewhat creative.

I did HosaFItness, and before that, JoySunny (of the two, I would recommend Hosa. JoySunny does have a chlornated swimming pool). Neither was upscale, but they had equipment and were relatively clean. If you came to Hosa at the right time, you were pretty much guaranteed an exercise machine. Both were 1500 for a year, 900 for six months.

You must be going to one of those upscale one's. The most I've seen when I visited that place was 100,000 rmb for half a year. The one that I go to right next door costed me 1800 rmb for 2 years. .. .
