Q: How much does an HIV test cost in Shanghai?

I checked one private clinic that came recommended and the price for an HIV test was just over 900 yuan. Seemed a little steep, as I believe it costs a lot less in the States. Anyone have any idea?

First of all, I hope that the test comes back negative.

That is about right, in terms of what I have been told.  Now, be warned that if the person tests positive for HIV, the doctor has a legal obligation to report this person to the Ministry of Health.

I do not know the prices in the public hospitals, but would assume that they are much cheaper. Also, if you work on a Z-visa for a year or more, they will give you a health check and STD screening which includes HIV.

Again, best of luck to whomever you may be asking for.

For HIV, There are two test. The first is a screening test called  ELISA test, It is cheap, probably less than a hundred rmb, only if you test positive for that you will take the second one, which is called Western Blot, and it could be more expensive.

@pogger34, There is a difference between the test results of someone who has taken HB vaccine, and someone who is positive for the disease. In the case of the vaccine you only show positive for Anti-HBSAg antibodies. In the case of being positive for the disease you test positive for many antibodies and antigens as well. So don't worry, any physician with a basic medical knowledge can differentiate between the two conditions.

China takes HIV very seriously so it'd be really cheap in a public hospital and you'd probably get a thorough exam.

It's only 300 or 400 or something for a full physical exam for foreigners working in China and this includes HIV, syphilis and TB.

I hope it doesn't come back positive, but if it does, then you will probably loose your visa.  Unless they changed the rules recently, HIV positive foreigners are not allowed to work in China.

Dunno but I had a general check-up of the dingaling and its current state of health and the doc gave me the hog's-eye swab (yeh, YOWZER), but instead of taking it out after, he left it in, went to the other side of the room and lit a cigarette. I was left stood there looking like a frigging pencil sharpener.

It is around 400 RMB. I've read a lot about what people say that in case you are positive doctor will have to tell some govt office.

If you ever had gone to a public hospital you will realize you can register any name since they don't ask for any ID. So you can state your name is Mickey M. or Flash Gordon.

I hope everything goes well with you man but if you are afraid about a positive result with any STD you better try registering at the hospital as Michael J. Fox, Billy Cojones or The Quijote. Make sure to keep a low profile name, don't choose any trending or famous name such as Barack O., Usain Bolt or James Cameron.

right, if you decide to go to a public hospital do follow morocotopo's advice. I recently went to test my thyroid and when I went to the machine to get the test  results paper back a bunch of already printed result papers were sitting around, among which I had to search for mine (later I found out the machine had had problems and so it printed many papers at the same time, or something). Anyway, guess what I found? A result paper of somebody's HIV test!  Just there for everyone to see.

Hopefully it'll come back negative but in any case, do give a fake name!
