Found a few before moving to china at around 500 bucks in Hou Xian Dai Chen.
Your best buddy is Google my friend, although lot of it is bulls***.
Be careful the pictures you look at, its never what it seems.
Look out for land lords to! They are known to take advantage of expats by asking ridiculous amount of up front cash. 6 to 12 months rents in advance!?? crazy!

Good luck!

Rent prices have surged in the past year, so while in the past it was possible to find a 1 bedroom for under 2000 RMB a month, you'll be hard pressed trying to find anything "decent" and conveniently located (aka near a subway) these days for under 2500 rmb.

For a 1-bed flat in Dongcheng you may find something around the 3000 price range, but this will probably be an older flat. You're cheapest option is to move in with others.

You can still find one bedroom flats for around 3000 a month in central areas but these will be in old houses that are most likely infested with cockroaches and depressing, ugly furniture.

WOW! I live in GZ, it takes me 15-20 minutes by bus or metro to go downtown and i pay 1300 a month, this is why I like GZ more, you can make the same money as BJ or SH but the cost of living is SO much less (and I'm close to HK!)
