Q: How much does it cost to send your kid to an international school in Beijing or Shanghai?

I have a few older expat friends living in Beijing and Shanghai with young children attending international schools. I don't dare ask them how much they pay. I think their companies pay for them.

It depends on the school & the age of the child.  My boys attend an American school and it runs about 70k per year, per kid.  For grade school level and above, it is 120k per year, per kid.

I have heard prices ranging from 50-250k per year, per kid depending on the school, its location and the quality of the education.

mattaya:

isn't that strange to pay so much? What's worth paying 70k?

Quality education is needed to give my children an advantage in the world. No price is too much for that.

The school I work in charges over 200k per school year.

mattaya:

someone is getting ripped off. i'm sorry but a kid has to attend school for over 200k? People don't pay that much for attending universities. and kids don't get scholarships or anything they are just learning.

School fees paid in China are tax deductible for Chinese taxes which makes a big difference..... (unless you are from the US where you have to pay taxes back in the US this may not really help so much...) surpriselingly is that many people don't know this and just fork it up each year. (there are other deductions available too.....)

That aside even after tax deduction it is expensive and it can hurt you financial...for many.

If the parents are earning the money then its also a kind of face thing to show of just like the cars, also they dont think like westerners family, education is very important.

Xpat.John:

Maybe. Here in China, just like the US, having your kids go to the right schools can make a huge difference in their future. So, is it considered a status thing to want your kids to be successful? I admit that some people here will send their kids to over priced English schools and tutor schools as a sign of wealth, but when it comes to the real school, I think that is just a matter of getting the best they can for their kids. At least that is the way it is with me.

If you can't effort a house/apartment, you rent/lease one. If you can't effort a car, you take your BMW (Bus, Metro, Walk). If you can't effort a wife, you hire one now and then. Life is simple if you know how to do it. Children's education is not easy as you as parent always want to give the best for their later future and you only have one chance to do so. Time never can go back. Education has nothing to do with face thing.
