People in southern China cut their dogs fur really short in spring..... not thinking about how skin that has never had UV rays will handle that. I think it is part ignorance, part laziness as it is naturally easier to have a short coated dog.

Cutting a dogs hair does NOT help it keep cool. The fur protects it against the heat from the sun. Dogs only (mainly) loose heat through the paws and respiration.

Now. A long haired dog with a single layer coat benefits from trimming, but should not be too short, a double coated (not sure about the English terminology here) does not benefit from trimming. A Husky is a double coated dog.

As others. I'd recommend getting a random dog from the pound. Make sure it comes with a medical check so you are not sitting with a sick pooch 3 days later. Here in town, the local pet street, ALL vendors lie about their dogs being vaccinated for rabies. You are not allowed to touch the dogs (which is kind of OK considering how peoples approach to hand-cleanliness is) BUT the giveaway is the question "What is it vaccinated against" as a retort to the sales persons "it has all the needed shots from the vet", none of the 5 dog vendors we talked to at the pet street managed to answer that.

Be vigilant in your pet shoppingg in China. It is a rotten industry.

From someone with a long haired dog under his desk in 30C temp. (the shedding is naturally nuts) This is a tiny dog.... yesterday it did about 12km walking a lot of it in direct sunlight, and he is tail-wagging all the time.

Husky's are bred for a particular environment: not China

It would cruel to have a dog with such a thick fur coat in a country with such hot summers

TedDBayer:

Huskies can be biters. I see Collies in China, dogs cool by tongue.

Unless you are planning to live in Heilong Jiang in a house backing onto some land, buying a Husky for a house dog is tantamount to sadism and means an eternity of suffering/cruelty for the poor dog....for the payoff of having more face than your neighbour.

Look on line for dogs for sale. There are often street markets selling pets. If I wanted a dog in China, I'd probably look for a street type dog/puppy and judge its personality. I raised cats and from judging kittens, there were exceptional ones, usually the first ones out of the next box, not all, but some with amazing personalities.

A really bad choice for China. Why would you cut his hair all the time. I know the reasoning it is hot so I must make him cooler. Very few people in China have any real idea of how to look after dogs, they have them as fashion accessories or simply because someone else has one it must be a good idea. Huskies are arctic weather dogs and need a lot of exercise. I know someone in the UK who has two and they walk them for ten kilometers every day, snow and rain does not stop them. If you really want a dog do some research about different types and remember to feed them properly. I see so many dogs here being given the same garbage as their owners have for dinner. Having a dog takes commitment, if you are not prepared to put the work in don't do it.

These dog's require lots of attention. Regular exercise at least twice a day in a park or large open space,  lots of good nutritional food, not what's left over from the family meal or KFC. They require lots of grooming, which is time consuming. And they are really not the kind of dog you want to keep in a small apartment or any type of apartment, it's just not fair to the dog.

We have huskies in Canada, but obviously that is because it can reach Arctic weather conditions. These dogs were bred for transportation on sleds through sleet, snow and bone-chilling winds. DOGS DO NOT SWEAT... they pant when they are overheated to cool down. Please do not get a husky unless you live in Jilan province or North Eastern China... as it would be incredibly bad for its health.

Even if you give it constant haircuts... it is like taking a man from Africa and putting him Greenland. He will be extremely uncomfortable, his skin will dry out and crack and may develop health problems. And when white people do go to tropical places and don't use sun block... you get the idea.

I have the same query so bumping up the thread..

Where I live the temperature goes to - 27 C, so the weather conditions are agreeable, and I have an active outdoor lifestyle so the dog is suited that way too.

If someone here has bought a huskey, or knows anyone selling it, please share tips for care, and what is a decent price range for a pup

you can even buy one on taobao i believe. Otherwise pet markets are the way to go.

While I agree with most people that huskies are a special dog type, this is mainly only true for the true breed.

The huskies in china are most likely whatever xxx generation and are already used to the conditions. Partly they also lost the drive to run 50km a day.

But anyway every dog has his own personality and a huskie is not a starter dog

Dog meat market starts soon.
You know how the ice cream trucks back home play music.

Sorry ...im very cynical about dog ownership in China.
