mikeca is needed to give you a good idea since he loves to take selfies with his cars while keeping his edited 38' broaden chest outward...kidding mike, don't rile up please.

45000rmb a mini cooper isn't bad for a young lady.

Mini copy. A real mini cooper will cost about 350k here with the import tax.

You must work in the news media. They call every damn photo a selfie. Pretty soon (if it hasn't happened already) one is going to call a painted portrait a selfie.

We bought a top of the range 2006 Peugeot 307 for Y50,000 last year and it's a beauty.  Like a small limo of you ask me.

The cheapest car I know in China is the Xiali car. At 9000rmb for a new car it is really cheap. Please bare in mind that it is a death trap and I do not recommend you buy it.

If she doesn't mind a cheap Chinese car then you'll be looking at Lifan 320 (Mini cooper style car), BYD F0 or similar for 45-50k. I've been running round in one of the Lifans for >3 years now & it's still a cracking little car. Costs about 0.5 rmb/km for fuel, insurance about 4k/year & comes with 2 year warranty.

50, thousand seems so cheap.  Anyway today my GF pointed to an SUV on the road and said "Look, we could exchange 3 of those for one of ours!" which was a Chang'An (Chinese) brand.  I decided to pull up their website just now and found some of their car models - they do fall into the price range listed

I agree with Royce, id go the second hand route. That much will get you a decent car just a few years old and fairly reliable.

I know a girl that regularly goes from zhanjiang in a BYD F0. It hasnt broken on her yet. Few years now. You can easily get that new for that budget.

But its simple, for that price you are going chinese or second hand.

great info guys   now down payment and monthly payments on 50k??

mike695ca:

Down payment is 30 percent of the car plus all taxes and fees insurance ect. So for a 50K car your looking at 20/ 25 K to drive away plus monthly payments which vary depending on your term. 3 years max. 1 to 3K a month i guess. If you buy second hand your paying 50 percent plus taxes and fees upfront.

I am maybe a simpleton...  in China anyways...  what if I buy it, give it to her... can I be responsible for payments when she owns it?

I wonder, because in Canada, the owner is totally responsible...  so getting a kid a car is a real big commitment and trusting thing. insurance costs sky rocket for 16-25 year olds.

what happens here in China? is 4000/yr a good guesstimate number for insurance?

then if and or when she runs over me on my little e-bike..  can I sue her? or do I have to sue myself?

Well if the car is in your name your responsible for the payments. If you want her to make the payments then its easier to just give her the down payment and let her deal with the rest. Shes chinese im assuming so itll be easier anyways. Insurance will be 4K or less a year. Much less if its a poop car and you just wanna protect yourself from damaging other cars. First year was included in my first payment estimate.

curious too about ownership and liability ,,,if I own it and she runs over me on my little e-bike who do I sue? can it be hers but I make the payments? sue myself?

back home I gave cars to the kids, risked it, for a little while..... then told them they were on there own   ....  my insurance was 7-800 ...  theirs was 24-2500. is it similar here?

mike695ca:

They dont seem to use age and experience in their policies. Not enough to notice a diffetence anyways. Maybe a few hundred rmb a year max . But she cant insure a car thats registered to you.

The BYD F0 and Lifan 320 are good budget choices for the Chinese brands, often you can find these two for well under 30,000 rmb second hand. The important thing to note is there is 4~5 versions of each with increasing options, etc... And the I know the cheapest F0 doesn't have ABS (not sure about the lifan) so if you're in the market for a F0 the key is to look for factory fog lights on the front that means it's the middle model with ABS. There are also versions without fog lights but with ABS but if it's got factory fog lights it's got ABS. In 2013 they also started making an automatic transmission version but you will seldom see a used one for sale.

If you feel you want to buy a foreign brand car instead, I would recommend taking a look at a Suzuki Swift. About 50,000 for a used 2010 model but you can find 2008 and older ones for under 40,000.

But if you're planning to buy a car in Shenzhen you'll need to enter the new plate number lottery and wait for your number to be called on than go get the plate number#..

Thank God I bought a car  years ago (BYD S6  Y85,000)

A few years ago I bought a 10 year old Citroen Fukang for about 20K, drove it for 3 years, I swear that car was bullet proof. It never once left me on the side of the road and i beat the heck out of it--always taking it into the countryside on dirt roads, mountain areas ect. Had more than 200K kilos on it when i sold it. Always passed emissions with flying colors. You can buy one now (2004-2007 or so) for 7-20K.
