Q: How much RMB equivalent can one bring into China from another country?

I will be a newcomer, so I don't have a Chinese bank account.  Is it best to bring cash [whatever currency] and then exchange to RMB in China?  How much can I bring into China?  Can I use a debit card from a non-Chinese bank in China without ATM issues?  What is the RMB equivalent than one can send out of China monthly?  Does Bank of China have internet banking?  Is it better to use a local Chinese bank or HSBC [or similar]?

I use HSBC in Jersey and Hong Kong. The total amount you can legally bring in is the equivalent of US $5,000, which for me is around £3,000 UK sterling. When I come back into China I usually bring that amount in cash and my wife carries the same amount. We have never had any problems at all.

Haaike:

Thanks for this info.  Can you use a "foreign" debit card at a Chinese ATM in addition to bringing into China this amount?
