Q: How much of something can you bring into China?

So my girlfriend will go back to the US for a couple weeks in January. Our foreign friends and teachers at our school all want her to bring back things like:

- 5 iPhone 5s

- 3 new iPads

- a bunch of vitamins

- various seasonings for cooking

Would she be allowed to bring that many things from another country back into China?

The vitamins and seasonings shouldn't be a problem, as they can easily be claimed as "for personal use". The iDevices however would likely be a problem if found. I'm not sure of the actual regulations, but I'm guessing if caught she will probably have to pay a tax or have them confiscated.

I had the same question a few weeks back: http://answers.echinacities.com/question/if-i-bring-more-one-new-ipad-back-me-us-will-they-get-confiscated

I brought 2 in several months back; one for myself out of the box (in my backpack) and one for a friend. The one for a friend I kept in a box in my check-in luggage, but I gift wrapped the box to make it look like a present (I had other presents in the luggage too). I wasn't stopped by customs or anything though, so I am not sure if this was any help or if it would have been more problematic. Anyways, thought I'd let you know.

Here's a few articles I found:

Whenever i bring anything into China ..i bring in such a way that I am using it..like for i phone..i just open the box..put Sim Card also so that it looks like it is in use..you can ask your GF to buy two Sim card from here..and at the time of coming back she can put those two Sim card to make it like she is using..

More than two i phone will be risky...

In 2010..when I arrived at Beijing Airport..there was a cross on my baggage made by chalk..and later custom guys asked me to open..but in my baggage there were only clothes around 30KG and daily use items..out of which some were new but i removed the tag in my home country itself...so nothing happened to me..they asked my why so much clothes..I just said them if Airlines 40 KG then why i should not use my weight allowance.

the reason of cross made on my baggage was that in the process of unloading the baggage from flight and sending it to the collection area..it goes through scanner..and custom officer whenever find any baggage suspicious they put cross so that later their colleagues can identify and ask passenger to open...

in the summary..if time will favors you..nothing will happen..2 times i came China with 6 bottle of wines..i was not stopped while passing through green channel...but sometimes i did not bring anything and i was stopped and asked to open my bag..
