Q: How much you put in HongBao gifted to your Chinese wife's nephew or niece in spring festival?
My wife decides that. I decide how much I give my favourite barmaids
200 per niece or nephew. Siblings get 800 and parents get tens of thousands.

I am lucky with my family Mike. We just do token amounts for the good luck. A few tens of RMB.
More for people who need it of course. Young cousins heading off to uni for example. But never tens of thousands.
The tens of thousands stay in the bank in case someone gets sick. If that happens the hat is passed around and all contribute fairly.
My favourite barmaids might get a couple of hundred, but don't tell the wife ![]()

Yeah, i think the difference is that no one in her family would ever need anything from us. They are all well situated. We give that amount because for years they have been giving that to me. So it all works itself out. The larger amount for the parents always comes back one way or another. They make sure of that. No one wants a dollar from us, but they really seem to appreciate that we are willing to do the same as they have always done for us. That we care. Thats all.
Chinese wife's cousin's brother's uncle's wife's daughter in law? Hmmmmm, 1 million dollars?
I am totally serious. Give One Million to everyone in your family. Just make certain that the currency is the Zimbabwe Dollar. (ZWD)
1 egg costs about 35,000,000 ZWD.
from what I gather reading your other posts here, that is what they deserve.
This topic just came up with my wife at lunch today - she only has two nephews and we were thinking whether we should give 200, 300, or 500 per. We ended up deciding to give 500 because we just got married and we were in Thailand last spring festival and didn't give them anything. We're buying her mother a Coach bag, nice cigarettes and booze for the father and a nice box of imported fruit for the family. We'll also invite the family and extended family for one dinner during the week. All in all it will probably cost us 3,000-4,000 but I'm expecting her dad will give each of us 1,000 in hong bao even though we're married and we'll likely get some gifts to so what goes around comes around.
