Now I'm not indicating that anyone here is the type of person who would go out and try to pick fights with people when they're out and about drinking, far from it. All I'm asking is how often you find yourself on the end of provocation from drunken/aggressive locals who may be looking for some trouble? I ask this because I was out with a friend the other night at a local BBQ and a couple of drunks came and sat next to us and were saying things in broken English about how foreigners are so and so or whatever. We quickly left, and I was pretty shocked because although I know such things happen here, I consider myself street-wise enough to avoid it all together.
The only trouble I've had is locals trying to get me to drink more, or how disappointed they are when I refuse their offer of a cigarette.
Never had any type of problem while enjoying a few (or more than a few) beers.
I've had guys come up to me and say ''foreigner''. I just look at the and say '' chinese person'' and then ignore him, usually someone will tell me to watch that guy is he's a thief. maybe even that he carries a knife. I've never met these guys later, but I buy beers in bottles to walk with because they make better weapons than cans.
GuilinRaf:
Be careful!
I once broke and used a beer bottle as a weapon. While it did keep me from a beating, I did require some stitches in my hand.
GuilinRaf:
Yeah, learned the hard way that night.
Better yet, I am just more careful where I drink now.
BTW, thumb up to counter the down.
TedDBayer:
Thats just matty stalking me, means I'm doing what you all want to do.
Yeah never had any aggression showed. Have had a few meals paid for and a few beers bought for me though!
Never. When I go out to the bars, I wear my Mao mask so NOBODY f-ks with me. If anything, I got locals bowing, kowtowing, offering up baskets of fresh fruit & bowls of incense, and nubile virgins begging to be my concubine for 88 days and nights. Ahhh... anonymity... a wonderful thing...
I really don't go drinking that often. However, I do like to visit the arcade at times and there is this one bald guy in particular..that looks like a game show host. I whooped on him while playing the video game and his ego was so big he started yelling saying in chinese hurry up...because I was taking my time. I basically let the entire 60 seconds run down and proceeded to whoop him some more.
I swear if that dude would have approached me I would have knocked him clean out!! (!
Good to see it doesn't happen often then. It was certainly a one off for me and I was surprised!
It has happened to me a few times when relaxing with a few cold ones at the weekend . Drunk chinese guys can invent all sorts of problems in their own heads about why they dislike a foreigner . although i am a relatively peaceful guy , I can turn on a SERIOUSLY intimidating ' don't fuck with me ' vibe when needed , but thats probably down to being Scottish ex army ;)
One time in the 3.5 years I was there. Some drunk idiot just sitting at the bar trying to instigate. I just laughed at him and walked away.
Never happened to me. Closest I came was when a Chinese speaking friend got into an argument with the waiter, funny thing was we were trying to tell the waiter the bill was wrong as we owed MORE money and the waiter was either being an a** or thought we were trying to get the bill reduced. Either way the show of aggression was misplaced.
Never, people are always cool with me. I'm an aggressive drunk though, SO F**K OFF, IF YOU DON'T LIKE THAT ANSWER!!!
I would just add:
Sometimes, when certain foreign sentiments are high, it is best to do ones drinking at home. For example, when last year that guy form the UK got beaten up in Xuanwumen for allegedly attacking a girl, that weekend my friends and I chose to host a cocktail party at home (Chinese and Western).
We got to socialize, introduce some "foreign culture" to our friends and remain safe when tempers were high (and get higher when drinking is involved.).
I can only think of two times where someone was blatantly rude to me, I wouldn't have even known if Chinese friends didn't translate for me though. Both cases were nothing dangerous though and not a big deal.
I'm suprised how little problems occur out here actually.
i got into a couple of fights when i was living in beijing
i often get out in shenzhen and never had this problem. I saw more foreigners fighting between each other than anything else. Chinese people are oftern peaceful.
