Q: How old was the oldest long term western English teacher you've met?
Loads of adverts cut off at 60, dammit I've seen some cut at 40.
60 is the work permit issue, perhaps insurance related....bit of a joke really.
Would you want to rely on your school's health insurance if the SHTF?
Seen some ads go up to 65 but they are a rarity.
Personally it was only a guy in his early 50s. Nowhere else to go really, but not a shirker and really put the effort in.
I know of one guy in his early 60's in SZ, but he's making his own visa arrangements and set up his own underground training centre..no WOFE set up.
How about you guys?
Do you think the cut off age will rise in the future if less teachers come over or the Chinese retirement age kicks up due to demographics or costs?

I knew some people in their mid-sixties. I think this has to do more with liability when it comes to foreign workers rather than legal retirement age. They don't want people dying on them.

I heard it's expensive to transport bodies back.

Much cheaper...I've got no problem being cremated, just as long as I'm actually dead 1st. 
I've seen a good bit of teachers in their sixties come over and teach in universities. I think they just need to have their own health insurance in order to secure the visa. Universities tend to prefer the older and married types where training schools and kindergartens like the younger ones.
I know a guy in his early sixties who works at a training center, but he's got some guanxi with the owner. It tends to be at the discretion of the employer within the private sector and certain universities.
One was 70 (English teacher) and another 73 (business teacher). This was many moons ago when new visas for retired folks were being stopped but renewals weren't.
What econinstructor said, although crass, is not far off the mark. Any sign of serious illness in any FT means cancelation of the contract and repatriation ASAP.
Oldest I have seen was a women at 65 years old. Still well and kicking... but they booted her out of China and she went to New Zealand. Nice lady... and had some connections which is why she stayed for 5 years past the maximum age.
knew a fellow named melvin, retired architect from new york city, he held on to 72 years old here in shandong but despite letter from the university president, he did not get renewed this year, also remember a 70 year old from guam that left 2 years ago from the architect university, shandong usually lets you slide to 65 and many over 60 move here to shandong, we have a 62 year old from california that came up from guangzhou 2 years ago after being booted as a toefl teacher in the south when he hit 60.
many cold north provinces still give visas to filipinos but old foreigner bones and cold weather are not a good combination on the athritis but they will keep your around till you get sick.
a teacher from new zealand stayed at the finance university to 67 but as soon as he had open heart surgery he paid for, no visa any longer.
i have never received paperwork on any insurance that is supposedly provided so i doubt we actually have insurance in most positions here and universities will send you to their own clinic first anyway.
