Q: How or where to find a job in SH as an expat
I have been here in SH for close to 6 weeks on a visitor visa. my visa permits me to stay for at least 6months. I am wondering where do expats go for job hunting/job search.. any pointers is good as i am finding this very challenging as i havent been able to connect with local recruiters/head hunters. I have submitted many online job applications but never have i got called for once, other than the teaching positions.
I speak native english, fluent cantonese and basic mandarin. It will be nice if someone in this forum can get me connected..

Teaching jobs really are your best bet if you're not already highly skilled in something else or a foreign company sent you out here. The labor force in China is so huge that most non teaching jobs are filled up by Chinese citizens willing to work for less than you'd probably be willing to work for.
Sites like this are a good place to find job listings in Shanghai but most will be teaching jobs. Every so often you see other type of jobs pop up though, such as localization/translation work at software companies. Maybe some marketing type positions if your from a western country (but youll usually need some experience in that field). I also see freelance/editing/journalist type jobs popping up frequently but again without experience the pay might not be what you want.
I met a Chinese guy the other day who works at a hotel and he said if you're a foreigner and can speak Chinese you can usually get a pretty good paying job at a hotel cause they want foreigners to be the point of contact for any foreigners staying in their hotel. I don't see many job ads for that though and again you might need experience with hotel related work first. Wouldn't hurt to try stopping by some of the large international/well known hotels in SH and dropping of your resume or asking them about this.
Hope this helps. Sadly unless you work for a foreign company and were sent here, you have alot of upper management experience, or very specialized experience that sets you above everyone else teaching may be your only option in China.

Is funny how you mention hospitality jobs! I even submitted job applications that i thought i have experience in which is mainly frontline hotel customer service roles thru their career job websites, but so far nothing is coming back to me :(
May i ask which "hotel" did the chinese guy (u met and chatted) was working with? Maybe i could hit that hotel up directly and see if they have new openings which requires English language? Do you think international 4 & 5 star chain hotels still practice drop in "resume"? I thought everything is done online these days? No?
