Let's rock the boat and sink this ship.
They don't have a concept of discrimination in China. They are allowed to put any requirements they want. Height, sex, age, appearance, its all fine to write requirements for these in job descriptions.
To me pretty high.
Discriminate against education (level, and what uni you attended), prefer male instead of females,
they used to ask for blood tests and if you had something like Hep B you had no chance of being hired.
Rampant is the word, and then so many employees are treated badly. Employers seem to always think they're doing somebody a favour by giving them a job.
Quite rampant. I'm an ABC who wanted to teach English as a part time job. In three separate instances, I walked into the interview room, and the woman took one look at me and said politely that the "boss" was busy and could not interview me that day. I was told to leave my contact information for if they have any available students for me. Bizarre that they would put an ad up for teachers without a surplus of students...

now i really wonder if this guy is an abc, or just a cybercom trol
every single school that seeks out foreign english teachers discriminates. if a chinese national happens to be very fluent in english they have no opportunity to get the same salary or conditions. you cant complain about the times you are discriminated against when you are benefiting from discrimination.
but discrimination is an open practice in china and accepted .
also discrimination is a sign of ignorance and no organization is better at keeping people ignorant then the prc
Actually in many contracts they never have equal opportunities listed. That is something I was aware of. Like there is no rule about discriminating about gender color here so it's free to do without any consequences since there is nothing written down like the laws back home have.
In several instances I've had a phone interview and the schools loved me, I am American, with TEFL, and teaching experience. and on the phone compliment my voice, and command of English. Basically they felt they hit the jackpot, and then when I arrive for the face to face interview looked shocked I am black!
They could not figure out from my name, or my resume, or my voice that I was anything but white. They either tell me they will keep my info and when students come they will contact me, or directly tell me "Blacks are no good" and that's that. Incredible, but true.
FACE is important in China. Some schools even let the students choose from a line-up of teachers based solely on appearance. A little too similar to a whore house if you ask me.

A way to protect foreigners from being humiliated like that? I think we are going to need a divine intervention. The thing is, they don't think it is humiliating, they even discriminate each other, etc. and these things are all normal.
The superficiality exists everywhere you look and everywhere you go, its just multiplied to the nth power here in China.
MissA:
Thumbs up for an insightful answer - (not for the discrimination)
Hi, I had the same problem here for teaching... I am non Native but they said on the phone that my English is ok for kidergarten. When I went to interview, they look at me and said " we are looking for european face" .... well, I know I am look like an asian woman , more than european, but I am European and I don't think the face is important for someone to learn English from you, but the way you teach him/her ..... Anyway, I am here since long time, discrimination is even at a subway station when a stupid with 8 years of school sell to you a card for subway access... They give it to you with no pleasure , I feel to beat them when happen this, they are so unpolite....

thats the problem with china becoming kapitalist. u never had this problem of white preference in the 60s.
A lot of racism, especially in the major cities. I receive many emails and phone calls for an interview, claiming my resume is good alongside with my accent for teaching English. When I get there for an interview(after a long struggle in tracing the exact office), everything changes and the response is that "We'll call you later" and the story ends there. I always have to feel forms. I thinks I've filled uncountable forms and I'm always left with hopes.I even talk with some on skype and they make it clear to me that only whites are needed. Meaning it's not the ability or capabilities that matter, but the skin colour.
I remember I left for another city and this agent told me he got a job for me (after going through my resume and interviewing me on phone). he promised he was waiting for me when I finish I should return and meet him immediately. Two weeks later, When I got back, I called and said I was coming, just for him to ask "what colour are you? are you a white or a black?" despite the fact that he had my photos. I felt heart broken and dropped the call immediately. What nonsense!!
:
Keep fighting no matter what the struggle is. There is a saying in Spanish: "lo que no mata te hace fuerte", that is " if it doesn't kill you it will make you stronger!". You can adapt the translation of your own meaning but all in all is that it will learn to find your way in a place where mercy and compassion is not part of the Asian Culture. No offense whatsoever. Seek until you find what you need and all endeavors it will pay off soon or later.
It's pretty gay. Black people get fucked more than Thai hookers. I wouldn't recommend black mates back home come here for a holiday, unless they like being angry.
There is no discrimination in China. The Chinese treat everyone with the same level of disdain.
Let's rock the boat and sink this ship.
dont worry. unqualified white guys are still getting jobs all over china, getting hand outs
