Q: How to recross a burned bridge?

I have had something like 720+ non-consecutive BCDs. Really want to get on the next possible one-way ticket home and tell my language mill off in a "F you, F you, F you, You're cool, F you." fashion or just ghost away on a day off. I want to escape to clean air, clean food, and clean soil (right now my little corner of the world has water almost as bad as here). My question is: who else has been fed up and gotten away at the drop of a hat? Have you gone against your better judgment and wanted to return? If so, how difficult is it? Will there be a problem if one doesnt get a letter of release but wants to change visas?

about 2 years ago i packed my bags and returned home during Spring Festival, not intending to return.

the day after my arrival home i went into my home university and told them that i was not going to return to China as i was wasting their money and my time being there - the Chinese uni was doing all in its power to sabotage the work of the FT's.

i had kept my home uni appraised of everything in weekly reports, and their visits confirmed what i had been saying, so they knew i wasn't bs'ing.

The president of my home uni persuaded me to return and finish my contract which I did, against my better judgment, as i had never broken a contract before.

I re-doubled my effort once back in China to fulfill by brief from my home uni, so at least I had my professional integrity intact despite the shit the Chinese Uni continued to put me and the other FT's through,

My home uni decided to break the agreement with the Chinese uni and i moved on to a much better place the next semester.

It was an experience that was hellish at the time, but I came out the better for it and with a glowing appraisal from my home country uni - which was all that really mattered to me professionally. The Chinese uni were the agents of their own demise as far as i was concerned.

I still feel sorry for the students who are being fecked over by schools run by short-sighted morans who are only concerned about their fragile ego's (and money)

I can't say I've been in your position, my employers here have been great but I do understand where you're coming from.

The thing with burning bridges and just leaving a crap job on your day off  is that it can be a hassle if you do decide later you'd like to work again in China, in a decent place.

The best thing to do would be to try to stick it out, fulfill your contract and leave on good terms (yes I know... just saying) so if you decide later you'd like to give China another shot there would be less chance of a stain on your record. Especially if you plan on finding another job here rather than going home.

Having said that, I've seen decent schools here sort out all sorts of red tape bullshit caused by a teacher's previous joke of a school. Often all it takes is a phone call.

Hm, can I ask you why in case you, for basically two years accumulated, feel so bad about your life in China you still call your desire to return home to go against your better judgment?

If you find staying in China better option for you so I find weird that everything in China, when I exaggerate a bit, pushes you to leave? Is your home country really hell?

And China still pushes you into that hell? Then may be you are a 'devil' - if so then not such a bad option in my eyes laugh

Honestly, if you get so angry that you want to leave and do leave in that F.. U fashion then after you leave you want to go back...? Something is mentally wrong with you.

To get to the point of F.. U for normal people, that place has to be so wrong. If it turns out that your standards for China were just too high (I can understand that) and you now realize that the situation was better than the average  situation in China, then why put yourself through the misery of going back and embarrassing yourself when there are so many schools and so many cities in China to choose from?

Unless you are unqualified, why even consider going back to a bad situation. (Sorrel's situation is different, technically she really didn't leave the first time.) And you should be mature enough to try and remain respectful and leave gracefully. I left 2 schools early and even though there were arguments to the end (they were 100% in the wrong) they were in their dumb way trying to force me to stay.

sorrel:

I agree, technically my situation was a bit different.

So i would ask the OP, what is the outcome you are looking for?

Do you want your employer to make some changes in how you are treated?

If so have you explored this, or do your employers just not want to engage with you on ANY level?

In my sucky job, i tried to engage with my retarded employer in a civil rational manner so they could not throw anything back on me as my fault.

In fact they kept changing the goal posts for the FT's to try and catch us out, but we were always one step ahead, which just pissed them off even more, and  ended up looking like asses in the eyes of all the non-Chinese.

Currently, from what i hear from a local colleague who is also a good friend, they have ended up with such a poor reputation that all they can attract is FOB's to teach.

OK so there is some obvious confusion here. I must apologize. I wrote the question quickly on my phone, which caused the ambivalence. I would not in any way shape or form return to that employer. I am interested to hear if anyone broke a contract, then changed a Z visa to a business visa or even tourist visa, or tried to get a new Z visa with a different employer after being an LBH for an extended time.

I would suggest - resign, get your various letters etc - then tell everyone to F-U!

Your only other real option is to lose your passport Tongue

Something is very fishy with this poster. Your OP is completely different from the question you're actually asking. The question you're asking is insulting and fits in line with the Chinese stereotype.

In fact your question is backfiring, you're attempting to insult foreigners but your question has brought out truths about shitty Chinese management.

Fair enough. Should have typed, "LBH"

just accept the chinese way of doing business until your contract is over, (the chinese way is do just enough to avoid being fired and nothing more), then maybe you can find a school that has evolved into the 20 century, if you find one that has evolved into the 21st century let me know, i could use a new work environment.

If you don't have a Chinese passport, then your not stuck here.

You refer to bad water. Are you from Flint?

If you are, I would say stick it out in China.

if you really want to return but you are blacklisted by old employer after a home run, simply get a new passport, and authorities can't find you in the blacklist database. rinse and repeat. if you like to take risks, send your old employer a postcard to gloat!

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change student visa to labourer one is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
