Q: How useful do you find your chinese assistant if your a teacher?

Well it could be teaching or any other type of job that requires you to have an assistant.

I stay away from situations where an assistant would be deemed necessary. So I guess you know my answer. I will downright turn down classes that I can't handle alone.

I refuse to sign any contract with a school that has Chinese assistants.

Most of them are alright, actually, but some are pushy. Some (mis)translate everything I say, not giving the students a chance to think (I fully believe you'll never internalize anything language-related unless you chew it over in your head a bit), and some seem to just want to show off their English to me, disrupting my class in the process. I also had a few incidents where assistant teachers would bring their friends into class to gawk at the foreigner, and when you're teaching children, having a bunch of laughing twenty-something being loud and making foreigner jokes and screaming "HALU" or interrupting to ask "YOU LIKE-A LADY GAGAAA?" is a sure-fire recipe for classroom chaos.

I have an extremely helpful, focused, determined and knowledgeable Chinese English assistant with me in the classroom. She is one of the main reasons why I have stayed with my present job for several years.  In truth, however, she is not an assistant -- she is really a co-teacher and we strive to bring the best to the students.  Others in my school are not as fortunate however -- some have assistants that are very much not a par with my co-teacher.  It's a roll of the dice, I guess, in the end.  I feel that I am lucky.

I have only had assistants for my part time jobs. In those cases, they have been extremely helpful (and necessary), because those students are children, some as young as 3 years old. I don't really need an assitant in my college classes because if the students don't understand, there is usually at least one student who can translate and clarify for the other students in each class. I don't need that help very often, just when it's an assignment that is a little difficult to explain.

By the way mattaya, you used the wrong "your" again.

I've never had one, and in essence, don't need one.

The only one I ever had was useless in the class room but once i got her out side she became a whole lot of fun. Cute as a button and horny as a mink, she loved to go shopping with me on Friday nights and then take me to her home for fun and paly time.

To bad she got fired but i am guessing it was because she was useless in the class room.
