Q: How violent would China be if anyone could own a gun?

What with the news of late in Colorado and the astronomical gun violence in the US because of the gun culture...what would China be like today if everyone had guns?

Peace or only half the population still alive?

You think crossing the street or taking the subway is scary?  Imagine 500 million armed Chinese people.

And yes I know it would never happen but what if?

Think it would be more dangerous. When a car hits another car here I have seen full blown "punches" been thrown so mix a gun into it would be chaos.

I think the government officials would have a lot more to be worried about than a person in a fender bender.

Personally, I think it would be an interesting social experiment.  I am sure there would be a lot of violence at first, but then people would realize that if everyone is carrying a gun, the playing field is pretty even.  I mean, would you be so willing to yell in someones face if you know that person is carrying a gun?

Precisely.  And if my memory serves me, that is a quote from my absolute favorite book, Starship Troopers.  The movies were one of the worst book translation disasters I have ever seen, but the book is awesome.

"...half the population..."

Wouldn't that make for a much more pleasant experience in China?  Not even sure if could still be recognized as China...

as in old imperial times... before Emperor forbid to own and carry any weapons

so - not a big difference, when law is almost equal to everyone, as John said above

btw. this law (not to own and carry any kind of weapon) is not for a public security of every person, but for security of the... khem...  empire (and Emperor himself...)

Just think of the Wild West with belt fed hand held machine guns and nuclear hand grenades! Then add in 1.4 billion people and you have the picture. (Albeit a VERY nasty one!)

Since in China it will still be a manner of not losing face, people will try to get the better weapon they can show off.

-You have a knife - I have a gun

-You have a gun - I have a machine gun

-You have a machine gun- I have a rocket

-You have a rocket - I have gas weapon

Luckily here is not as easy to get nuclear material, otherwise, half of China would be out because two guys decided to know which one has a better weapon.

In the States, I had a gun.

I sold it when i came to China.

If I ever move back to the US again, I will again carry a gun.

Xpat.John:

That is what I love about the state I live in (Nevada).  You can easily get a concealed weapon permit, carry a loaded gun in your car without a permit, AND silencers are legal.

GuilinRaf:

Puerto Rico has the strictest gun control laws in the US. Takes about ten months between buying your gun and actually being able to take it out of the shop.

All it did was drive everyone to the black market. Pay three or four times the amount, but you get your gun at once AND it is not traceable to you.

I got mine in  4 months but only because I was a prosecutor.

Our crime rate is astronomical and only 46% of murders are solved.....

Check out what happened in October 2011. The FBI arrested nearly 130 Police officers, and Prison guards for corruption, mostly drug related. Having a gun in Puerto Rico is a necessity.

In California, it is a 30 day wait to get a gun.  Plus you can't buy certain types of weapons.  Concealed weapon permits are all but nonexistent.  Magazines can't hold more than 10 rounds, etc., etc.

Nevada, you can get a gun legally in under an hour.  Fully automatic, sniper rifles, just about anything.  And if you want an untraceable gun, you can just go to one of the many gun shows and get one there.

If the tragedy that happened in Colorado happened in Nevada, I doubt the guy would have gotten more than 3 shots off before he was filled with holes.

I think the cutsey gun industry would flourish.  You know how they have cell phone charms?  They will come out with gun charms here.  And all the girls will be walking around with their little pink, lace, charmed up, bedazzled guns.  Other than that, the thought scares me!

A: No, it's not allowed to work under RP at 2nd job! I'd say, Z visa
A:No, it's not allowed to work under RP at 2nd job! I'd say, Z visa/RP sponsor can have an objections to your part-time job. I did the same at my English teaching in China and elsewhere, butT ... I casually mentioned at my prime job, some kindergarten or another school asked me to work with them part-time. Then, my Q: "Is that permitted?" ...  Answer from RP sponsor was always "Yes, but you can't be late or miss the classes at our school ..." with my reply: "No, our work schedule has a priority, and I'll arrange classes at kindergarten only in my free time." When I cleared that, I was undertaking any extra teaching hours at other schools and private students in my free time.Sometimes, teachers at my prime job asked me if I'm willing to have some extra classes elsewhere.I accepted after the talk with School's principal. I suggest, you test the felling at your Z/RP sponsor and once you see they don't object, you can work at 2nd job. Keeping your 2nd job as a secret from your employer won't work, 'cause you're laowai and Chinese know exactly what you do in your free time. However, despite your employer's agreement for extra work, you are still in violation of Chinese Labour law, and even if your sponsor agrees to your extra work, you can still get in trouble, because it's clearly written (somewhere ... ) that under Z/WP, one can work only at the Z-sponsor and nowhere else. Penalties ... I'd say, there won't be any warnings and you'll be required to exit China in short Exit time.It never happened to me, so I can't really advice how is when manure hits the fan ...  -- icnif77
