Q: How will China fill vacant teaching positions?

Because people are resticted from coming into China, how are schools and teaching centers supposed to fill vacant positions for the 2020-21 school year. Thankfully, our school has kept all of our teachers. Many schools are struggling to get teachers to sign contracts that are still in China. Sadly, there is a huge shortage of those teachers. Looking on this site's job board, I am surprised at the low pay these schools are offering. What are your thoughts?

My current school kept all of (both) it's teachers. I did make inquiries at several other schools jut to see what would happen. I received zero responses. I'm guessing that a lot os schools will be SOL come fall.

the benefits of working in China are now far out-weighed by the restictions and challenges of working there.
The poor working conditions, previously tolerated by FT's, are not helped by the low pay.

But it is the vastly increased restrictions, scrutiny and tracking that working in China means is less acceptable.

Who wants their EVERY move tracked?

icnif77:

I don't really care about tracking ... (using Tor & Opera w/ Vnp browsers ..), but all other things you mentioned application for an English teaching job in China is very similar to Cape Canaveral Leaving-the-Earth application and ... I've always thought, I am just a teacher.

I am in the midst of new teaching job application to a country in ME with huge benes ... If it's not a scam (about what am not certain, yet!) and I will be successful at securing Working and Residence permit, I will start to work as an employment referrer, i.e.  ... trying to get FTs out of China and into ME.

StMattTD:

You are probably going to be proven wrong when China opens up its borders again and people once again come here for the money.  There are very few places you can make as much money with as little effort so I have no idea what you are talking about regarding "low pay".

Other markets either simply don't pay as much (Europe and South America) or are going downhill ME (without oil money).  Not to mention some places are equally as oppresive, maybe even worse.

@StMattTD
maybe, but even money won't compensate for the abysmal way chinese schools treat FT's - who for the most part are treated no better than performing monkey's.

Workers will still be ***ed over on working conditions, professionals who want to make a positive impact will still for the most part be undermined by locals who won;t want to 'lose face' - there have been numerous posts over the years on this.
intrusion into a FT's personal life will be ramped up and even more controlled and restricted.

for the professional who wants a life, not indentured work, no amount of money will out-weigh other countries who are also looking for the same.

From what I've heard from a few friends, schools are head hunting the teachers still in the country and offering them more money to jump ship and work for them.

It will be interesting to see what happens over the next year. Recruiting was difficult before the virus, even if the borders were opened tomorrow it would be a nightmare trying to find decent teachers and as Sorrel said above, conditions there don't look to be improving.

Sandnose:

Qualified Filipinos are coming. Good bang for buck. Educated and eager to work for the same salary as locals. It's all win especially after they distinguished themselves in online classes during lockdown. Schools can charge the students FT rate and pay the teacher LT rate.

What about the fact ''you can't get Z visa unless you're holding Native English passport"?

I assume they'd be working under the radar on student visas etc - apparantly that still happens, unless they got their degree from a native speaking country.

That's what it crossed my mind, while I was writing Q above ...:

Native English passport holders can't know the answer ... he he

I still have in mind watching Chinese teacher trying to fill it up an application for my WP in June, 2017 in Guizhou and machine just rejected few things ... and if I remember right, the first rejection came as he entered my passport.

It was possible to secure Z for non-Native if degree was completed in native English country, but I am not sure if that still counts.

Doesn't matter what ... China still owes me flight refund from the last contract (2016/17) and until that is settled (what I don't count on it!), no more China for me.

Good luck to all 'Chinesers', i.e. laowai living and working in China. I am looking for the greener classrooms elsewhere.

Russia and Turkey-stan were both disasters, in S. Asia, I didn't receive too many replies, ME is next ...

From what I understand dodgy schools that rip off teachers are everywhere, the ME probably isn't much different but good luck with the application anyway, maybe this one will be the winner..

This stupid fecking virus is a huge pain in the arse but if there are still jobs being advertised and you're able to get a visa you're probably in quite a good position. I feel like there must be thousands of teachers out there waiting to see how this all shakes out and not applying for anything just yet so anyone willing and able to jump on a plane should be getting lots of offers.

'Jumping on the plane ...' that one is tricky. I warned my employers about ... i.e. I can pack and move per a week notice, but I am not sure will I be successful at booking of the plane ticket.

Yeah, virus thingy screw it up the matter big time, what you forecasted somewhere in Jan./Feb post.

I remember, I was thinking I won't wait until virus is gone and I was sending CV steadily since January, 2020. I was just a bit short of replies, butT ... I am non-native English sneaker. We often run short of the CV's feedback.

Well here's my next forecast...

Travel bubbles / safe countries will be more of a thing as countries start to get their numbers somewhat under control and try to get back to normal. That will mean if you're coming from a place with little or no cases you'll be ok.

Americans - going on the situation there now at least - will be the last people anyone wants in their country. Americans happen to make up a big percentage of English teachers, take them out of the job market for now and there's a lot less competition for dudes like you.

Hopefully there won't be war or something breaking out and the coming depression/ recession won't kill the industry... the way 2020 is going though who knows.

Unlucky native English (Americans, he he ..) teachers must go into the shed for two weeks everywhere around the world.

Fok it, as what I read that test is PIA anywhere.

I think, you might bring negative-HIV certificate (as to the Russian Embassy before visa stamp ...), but one can pick-up Covid on the way to the new country ... with negative test in hand ..., so I would wait. I won't do it before my arrival.

An arrangement has been made between the Philippine and Chinese government for this specific job.

icnif77:

I predicted ... similar as Stiggs ...

... we might be psychics ..

... that regulation ''only Native English passport holders can work as an English teachers in China .." won't hold for too long.

There are 300M students of English language in China and there are not enough native English teachers even if the entire world's no. of native English teachers come to China.

Japan, S. Korea, Vietnam and other smaller countries can impose that requirement, but not China.

It wasn't a prediction ... it is a simple math. I was so smart ... in 2016.

... or, maybe it's part of a plan to replace native teachers.

People have been saying for years the western 'influence' is becoming unwelcome in China and recently Australia and the US haven't exactly been on good terms with Beijing.

IMO, screw Chinese and constant fight for the contract respect. I came in as an English teacher and became a part-time defence lawyer ...

While some backlash against USA&Oz is in play, one should also look where the requirement "only native English passport holders can work as an English teachers ... in China" came from.

In my eyes, demand for native (any language) teachers comes from the low level of the foreign language in the hiring country.

I would also have doubts to be taught Chinese by the teacher from Japan .., so in China, only teachers' passport give an assurance one teaches proper language. Spain or in EU overall nobody gives a flying fork for the non-native English teachers despite no-working-permit needed in my case.

Phillippinos all speak English with heavy Asian accent, so all the luck and good riddance to Chinese students.

They don't need to as many schools won't be opening any time soon.  Teachers have decreased but so have available jobs and the government is cutting funding for public jobs.  My guess is that locals will pick up the slack and that many of these places will retain online foerign staff at reduced rates until the situation clears up.

There is also an increasing amount of Filipino teachers coming into the country.  Pay is going to go down if anything due to the recession.  Even if there is a demand for English teachers it doesn't matter if there is no money to pay them with.  A lot of teachers lost their jobs.
