Q: How worth it is it to get suits tailor made here, and how's the quality?

I've had a few Chinese recommend I get some suits tailor-made, but I'm a little reticent, what with stereotypes about Chinese quality products and all that.

How much money does one usually save up on a good suit, and have your experiences been good so far? Is the fabric of good quality (generally)?

I have had suits tailor made for me both in Thailand and in Hong Kong, and I am very pleased with them.  Savings were about 40 % of store bought prices, and they fit perfectly, feel and wear nicely.  Much better than regular ones of the shelf.

I have been reluctant to buy any made in China.  Somehow, Chinese tailors remain me of the contractors back home and when they are hungry they will quote very low to get the job, and worry about cutting corners afterwards to make a profit.  And I am not an expert on fabrics to really know the difference between a real one and a fake, or poor quality stitching.

You walk into a Chinese tailor shop here and everything looks run down, very small and dirty.  Both in Bangkok and in Hong Kong, the shops were nicely set up, with A/C, with nice racks and many samples on display hanging from racks.  It gave you more confidence that they would still be in business for years to come.

But that is me, I have been burned too many times, and I just do not trust anyone here.

In Thailand I had 4 silk shirts made to order, for which I paid the equivalent of $ 100 US dollars, and was surprised at pick up time when they handed me 5, one extra as a gift for the order, they explained.  In Hong Kong, the tailor threw in a free shirt and tie for the suit.  I have no idea what would happen if I order a suit here, just make sure the tailor does not spit or picks his nose while taking to you.

If you happen to be in Shanghai, visit Dave's Custom Tailoring.  People like to talk about the fabric markets where you can get a suit made for like 500rmb, but really, why bother?

Tailor Dave has been rated as one of the 10 best bespoke tailors in the world by Forbes magazine.  Granted, a suit from him can run around 3000-5000rmb (or more depending on what you want), it's still much cheaper than say Seville Row in London or getting a suit made in New York.  Most of the fabric he has is imported from Italy.  I think they have an office in Beijing as well.

I personally have 3 suits (and shirts) made from there and I am 100% super happy with them.  They look fantastic and I have received nothing but compliments on them.

Here's a link to thier website:  http://www.tailordave.com/  HIGHLY recommended.

I got one made in Shanghai... no complaints. Probably paid a couple of hundred more than i needed to, but next time... I don't wear it a lot (naturally), but it seems ok! Certainly, it fits, and if worse comes to worse, $100 bucks for a full suit is something I could afford every year, if I really needed to.

OTOH, talking of prices, I was with someone who checked out some shoes. Starting price was 650RMb. After he said no, the price suddenly plummeted to 350... by the time he walked out of the shop, it was about 100Rmb.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
