After 5 years in jiangsu, i feel ready for a change. however i know the east of china is more developed than other areas, so i'm trying to do some research before i make any choices about where to move to. how would you rate your city? in terms of western restaurants, cost of housing, western food(available to be purchased in a supermarket, i've grown to love metro), nightlife, or even the level of putonghua that's spoken (i've been to places where nearly everyone converses in their own local dialect) help answering any of the above would be greatly appreciated
Hangzhou:
1) Lots of good western restaurants, probably the best in China, and generally cheaper than other cities (the only thing that's cheaper; anything else is considerably more expensive). Ingredients are more readily available in large supermarkets than they would be in other cities.
2) Cost of housing: Through the roof. Probably one of the worst cities in China for that, especially downtown.
3) Nightlife: I hear it's good, not into that stuff myself.
4) Local dialect: You'll mostly hear Mandarin in the city, spoken with a southern accent, although there there are enough northerners down here.. You'll notice very few people that are in Hangzhou are actually from Hangzhou, and the locals don't see their dialect as being very prestigious.
I rate it pretty good. I left at one point, and ended up coming back so it can't be all bad.
Mudanjaing in the Nth East is big enough to get lost in but small enough to be cosey
the cost of living is quite low and housing is most likely half of what you are paying now.
There are some western shops like city beach and of course the usual suspects KFC and pizza hut they had a McDonalds but it when broke
the supermarkets stock most things you are accustom too.
KTV is the norm but I'm a little old to worry about night clubs so you need to
Google that one
I like it and cant wait to get back there 49 days to go not that I'm keeping count or anything
Shenzhen:
It`s warm here unlike most of China...similar climate to LA, but it rains more in the summer...more tropical.
Hong Kong is next door, which makes for a great escape and shopping for all the things you can`t find in China and of course the nightlife in HK can`t be beat.
In Futian and Shekou (districts in Shenzhen) there are great western restaurants and bars....the nightlife is great for expats.
Cost of housing...in a good part of the city you are looking at about 6-10k RMB a month, but you can find deals outside of the `rich`areas...maybe even for 2k...depends on your standards.
Mandarin is the main language spoken here unlike the rest of Guangdong....so this is a plus.
The women here are from all over the country and are amazing....almost like LA, where most people who live here are from somewhere else.
Once you live in Shenzhen you will never want to leave...at least to another part of China...IMO.
The only downside is there is very little culture or history here....it was a small fishing village 30 years ago...but now is a modern city.
Dajing: A hick, country city. There are a few Western style restaurants. Very backwards..lots of smart***,arrogant,infantile/annoying/highly childish Chinese..stupid Chinese females that look at foreigners like they're criminals/from outer space,etc..lots of ugly looks. :( This city like other Chinese locales reminds me a lot of So. Korea..very xenophobic,foreigner-unfriendly,arrogant,ridiculous,rude and ill-mannered Chinese, etc. Very cold winter weather.
Shaoyang -
One Mcdonalds
Two KFCs
Three bars
Nine other foreigners
Very nice and friendly locals, especially those who run small businesses
Lots of surprised looks from people who've never seen a foreigner before
Very, very cold in winer, very, very, very hot in summer
Very cheap
A strange but endearing city.
