I am curious to know that how the local peopl of Xi'An city particularly and Shaanxi province in gerneral, treat to outsides?
I am planning to move Xi'An , please any suggesstion?
I think there is a mixed bag of reactions. It is not a regional thing as much as it is a cultural thing. If you are in the city, probably nothing or very little will occur. While Xian is a smaller city than many, I am sure they are used to seeing foreigners.
In rural areas, you may be treated as a rock star by the younger generation. Parents of those kids will evaluate you. The older generation will stare at you trying to decide who and what you are.
When buying things, they will see you as money. When working for them, they will see you as a business opportunity and marketing option. As a teacher, they want to see results. As a person walking down the street, kids will point you out to their parents. They will be brutally honest if you are fat or old. If you have dark skin, you will be treated differently.
It is important to take no offense as it is their culture and their homeland. It is predominantly Hans, and outsiders are seen as unique and different. Thick skin and broad shoulders are needed by all expats while dwelling in the middle kindgom.
