Finally landed, the picture they sent was of their new campus not the old. Side jobs have not popped up and found out the german teacher with a kid is getting a return flight and I am not. I am more dissappointed in the act that I don't get benefits being a professor like I thought, no free lunch assistance around campus or respect really. Want to hear others stories and any suggestions on the best way to leave. Say without blacklisting or any other problems, contract has a penalty if I don't pay what are the repercussions?
check your contract.
everything you expected to get should be outlined in it.
are your employers in breach of contract?
once you sign, don't go comparing with others as they will probably have negotiated different things. It is too late then to complain about such differences
expatlife26:
Definitely, also remember that other people have more experience and bargaining power. It sounds like you just arrived. Professor is a pretty prestigious academic title that they kinda let expat teachers throw around but doesn't often apply. To be a professor usually you need to be publishing works and get an appointment to that rank by the university; teaching classes at a university level does not make someone a professor.
Just make sure you ask for those things you want in your next contract!
Yup, check your contract regarding the return ticket. If its not there then its likely the teacher with a kid negotiated it as he's probably more concerned about his finances having to buy at least 2 tickets to go back without it.
As for meals, never heard of any university offering free meals regularly as part of a contract.
If you dont like your situation I'd advise you to rough it out if possible and make the most of it and when the contract is over go elsewhere (unless you just want to go back home). You'll need a good reference or at least proof that you completed the contract in order to get another job down the line in China.
I worked two times for the same university
- one time was for a post-doc, funded by the Chinese Academy of Science => got all the things promised, which were income + accommodation, no extra perks.
- one time was for a position of lecturer => income and accommodation as promised. They were supposed to reimburse the plane ticket I paid for to come to China, never happened. It was an oral promise, so couldn't push much, it was pretty much *lalala I hear nothing*. I was supposed to get help for doing extra work for companies as expert (again, informal oral promise), did not happen. Just did that myself
'leave School and keep Residence permit'
1. Find one (or more) article on the Contract, your employer doesn't respect, i.e. ' late salary', 'apartment not suitable for living (no TV or kitchen)', 'required to work more hours than per Contract', and so on;
2. Find new employer (RP sponsor);
3. Give Resignation notice to the School. Make 2 copies.
If possible, try to respect Resignation notice (usually 30 days) from the Contract, unless cause for quitting require immediate termination.
4. Visit SAFEA in the city with copy of RN. It is the same office, where you got Foreign Expert Certificate. Usually, big Gov. building with loads of flags outside. Other name is Foreign Expert Bureau. If you are in the smaller city, you might need translator for interview at SAFEA.
SAFEA will help you further in process of changing employer, and keep your RP intact.
For new employer, you'll need FEC Cancelation certificate and Release letter.
SAFEA will talk to your School, so advice is your record at School is good. If School has complains on your work (late or miss classes, drunk,...) I'm not sure about outcome.
Good luck!
If your Contract doesn't stipulate fare refund, that isn't 'violation'. Probably, you don't have same salary as other FT either.
icnif77:
If your School doesn't respect Contract, Contract deem to be invalid, and there are no repercussions, i.e. 'penalty fee for not finishing the Contract'.
School MUST give you all documents (your last salary too) required to change employer before Contract expiration, in 30 days after your last working day. I'm guessing, SAFEA would support you on 'new/old Campus photo' as misleading. You'll find more about it at the interview in SAFEA.
Something seems odd

There should be a probationary period, use it to leave now.
Here is what I find odd about your post.
You do not state details about what is stated in your contract.
You mention the German teacher, are you working under the German teacher's contract? Look at your contract, what does it say about the flight bonus?
Ok let me bottom line it, if they are following the contract than you are in the wrong. You can't blame them for your poor negotiation skills. They are supposed to offer you lunch assistance? is that in your contract? They are not respecting you? How so? Give details.
The point is this, if you do not like it, tell them in writing that you are enacting the probationary clause and go back to your home country and do a better job with negotiating a contract. An employer is not going to negotiate the best contract for you.
There are 3 teachers one is a german, we are both working on a 4 month contract. Well they made a mistake in the contract. The one I signed prior to coming, said I would get return flight. Now they are asking me to sign a new contract which says I will not get a return flight because we are not working a year. The German teacher brought it to my attention and asked was I being compensated. Also she does not even have a masters degree so she is not more qualified then me and does not have more experience. Essentially, they are asking me to sign a different contract then what I signed before I came.
Englteachted:
If they are asking you to sign a different contract and you claim the German teacher is less qualified than you because you have a Masters/ PHD (how's your German?) than you should be smart enough to know to say "no". And you should have been smart enough to state that fact in your post, it is important. 4 month contract, do they provide a working visa, resident's permit or FEC?
Englteachted:
When you talk about the picture they sent you, was it of your apartment or just the school? Basically did they pull a bait a switch on you with regards to the apartment? Because if they sent you a photo of the new campus instead of the old campus, who the hell cares.
icnif77:
You can sign new Contract, wait till you get RP and FEC. Then....contact me off the tread for more. 'Anna Wang'…..?
