Q: How's the eyesight of your student's?

I ask this for a serious reason, some of my students can't see, but won't wear their glasses. I explain to them why they should wear them. Some suggest fashion plays the part, but if it is fashion thing, why do some just wear frames! Man sometimes I shake my head

Ive noticed this too. I tell many of my students that they need glasses because every time I write something up on the board they must walk forward and squint at what Ive written.

I think it comes from the whole idea of not thinking for themselves. Someone important (their mom, or the doctor selected by their mom) hasn't directly told them that they need glasses and or need to always wear them so they just dont. Regardless of what their eyes (or foreign teacher) tells them.

Lots of kids with bad eyesight. Lots of kids with glasses. Too much homework, too much study. We have to play our part to help and write in big BIG letters on the board ok?
Cool

My students do this thing where they use their fingers to make their eyes more slanted and tinier to help them see. I have NO clue how that helps ... I tried it and could only see my eyelids Puzzled

I had a student who I assumed was a bad student. When he wasn't copying down something, he was saying "kan bu jian" even though he was close to the board. So I thought he was being a smart ass, and handed him my class notes to copy. He copied them in a second, and answered every question, and I realized he wasn't a bad student at all, just blind as a bat.

I talked to his parents, but they were weird people. They refused to admit he was anything but perfect, and even something as minor as glasses they considered a loss of face.

I don't consider them indicative of Chinese, though. They were just weird parents.

Too many of my students do not have glasses who obviously need them. Moreover, I can not seem to convince my TA to write plainly on the blackboard. When she is teaching, I walk the aisles and am appalled by the scribble of many of my students.

A two pronged problem: many students need glasses and the chicken scratch that passes for English writing my a majority of the native Chinese teachers here.
