Q: How's your Sat night going to pan out? Mine has just taken a body blow...

I've booked a ticket on the brand new fast train to Urumqi tomorrow and have just been informed that they won't recognise my booking unless I go to the station tonight at 10.30 for a meeting with the Fat Controller.  The reason is that I'm a foreigner and they are panic stricken due to recent violent ethnic (??) events.  As a foreign passport holder they just don't know what to do.  If I don't go to meet the sucker they'll cancel my booking and I'll have to take the bus.  And I hate the bus.

And the brand new massive train station is not conveniently close at all.  Arrgghhh....

Do you hate China?

Chinese bureaucracy that bugs the bejesus out of you?

The more they control, the more oppressive they appear and the less I feel like I want to stay.  An unwelcoming host will create more unwelcome guests.

Not really many other countries that you can make $4800 a month. So like myself, you'll have to get past it and keep going.

This type of situation has happened to me. Our first child was born in America and brought back to China on my working visa.

We had our second baby in China and because of our first baby that has no record or any relationship to china other then his Chinese mom on a American birth certificate was forced to adopt her own baby while in China and sign (i kidd you not) 78 documents and 6 interviews and a trip to the Guangzhou American embassy to state I have no children born in China to get her qualified for Chinese healthcare benefits and to allow her to give birth in China and to receive her salary while on leave and to allow her to get our baby a new birth certificate.

It took 3 months but we did it. I hated it though. Why why why is all I asked myself..

derek:

Wow! How did you keep it together and not snap?

Actually it was my wife who had to suffer the most and had to do most of the leg work. All I could do is worry sick about the birth certificate.

Doesn't sound bad. A friend of mine was on a business trip to Taiwan, HK and many places in mainland China, he hadn't seen his wife for a month, but had arranged to have her flown to Beijing for them to take the train to Lhasa. When they show up at the train station they are told "Some government people needed your space" no refund, no offer of getting on the next train. So they went to Thailand for a week instead.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
