Q: HSK 5, is it worth it?
I'd like to hear from anyone that has taken the HSK 5 and what, if any, benefits they have gained from passing the test.
As I understand it, HSK 5 makes it much easier to obtain a Chinese government scholarship for Master's programs, and qualifies one for jobs that require "Mandarin Fluency". Are these assumptions correct?

I have an HSK 4, and Wall Street told me never to tell the students hahaha. Because once students know you can speak Chinese on a good level, they'll only use Chinese. So careful where you use a level 5. I'm sure it will open doors for you and maybe even get you a talent Z visa, who knows.
I have a HSK 6 and have never been asked to show it. Obviously it shows as proof of your language skills if anyone asks for it and you can put it on your CV, but companies are more likely to test you themselves if they care that much. Not sure about a HSK 5 for scholarships, but I've never seen a job requiring a HSK 5 as proof of fluency. Plus HSK 5 is not fluent anyway since there's another level above it.

So based on your experience, was it more valuable as a goal-setting benchmark for your language abilities than as an actual accreditation?

I had to do it for my degree. I technically couldn't graduate without it. I personally didn't find it particularly beneficial, but I guess it's nice to know what kind of level you're at. It makes sense that you would need a HSK of some level for a scholarship though. After thinking about it, it does sound like one of the requirements they often have. I guess I got the downvotes because people think I'm showing off, but I was merely mentioning it to show I know what I'm talking about. I would say if you're interested in getting one, do it. There might be lots of new vocab for you to learn which can only help your Chinese in the long run.
