I have Iphone from home which is locked . If you can get an unlocked one this is better. Mine can not be unlocked yet because they have not cracked it. But even then if I restore my setting the phone will lock.  This is done to tie you to a provider and apple want to sell you apps etc. In China iphone is unlocked.
I just bought a slightly used LG 3D phone, similar to HTC. I paid a fraction of what a used iphone would be. These phones can be unlocked and stay this way. In China again they are unlocked, but I believe they are faster and better than even the iphone4s. Reviews state how well made HTC is , they have a more solid feel than Samsung. My phone plays 3D movies etc without the need for glasses. The screen is bigger than iphone, i think the iphone5 will have a bigger screen. iphone is status in China. Either phone does more than I need. I only normally care about phone calls, I never text. But in China I will need a translator and maps.

HTC is a company. they make some good phones.  Apple and HTC have competing operating systems, so you should try each of them out before making a decision.  It's really not something others should do for you.  Just go somewhere and play with them and make your choice.

@sandywagy - so many options...what is your price point? Do you have a particular purpose besides making calls and texting? As crimochina pointed out, your appstore access will be limited with an Android phone. I own a Meizu M9 because I wanted to buy the best Chinese phone for my needs. It uses Android and has limited appstore access. Fortunately the translation app I need is available and other apps I can download off the internet.

basically you need to look at iphone versus an android phone. but this is tricky if you buy the phone in mailand china. because the gov is trying to screw google at every turn they dont allow the andriod apps market apps. which means you cant get  the google maps  app you can find an end around to get the google translate app which is a god send. you need to think to yourself what apps you want and figure out if you can you  them on an andriod phone that has been nootered or be smart and get the andriod phone from hk.

also if you are a single man, get an iphone it is a chick magnet here

Really i think this depends on how computer savvy you are. Andriod is no doubt a cool operatin system, you can do alot more with it and it allows alot more customisation and fiddling with back-end stuff like flashing new versions of andriod and changing user settings etc. HTC is a great compnay and in my opinion a good challenger to apple. Their devices are nice to look at and hold, well built and their own version of andriod called "htc sense" is very easy and nice looking. apple is obviously ver y easy to use, and also built well, etc but it does tie you to using other apple products a bit more. My parents both use iphones, thats how easy and intuative they are but to get the most out of itunes services i had to hook them up with imacs and appletv along with itiunes accounts and icloud, one you haev this it all works harmoniously together.
If you are more of a home windows user then i would recommend htc as you can move accross all types of movie and music files without the need for converting into a format apple likes.
Locking of phone is not that important if you are computer minded, any andriod can be "rooted" to allow installing of programs not intended for that model or country. Alot of android phones in china computer markets are already rooted and they install all sorts of chinese programs that dont ship with the original phone. Rooting also allows any version of andriod to be installed, you could buy a motorola and run htc sense OS or samsung android version.
One more thing to consider is face value, I brought this up in another post of mine, it may not mean much to you or me but pulling out an iphone and putting it on the table at dinner etc means alot more than doing the same with an andriod, regardless of functionality. I have an iphone and two andriod devices, an lg and motorola. Many people are perplexed when i use anything other than the iphone.

oh btw check out xda-developers to see what your intended phone is capable of

If I had to choose a phone today, it would be the Samsung Galaxy II.  It has an Android operating system like most of the HTC phones have.

I love new toys and I am constantly updating my phones.  I have tried iPhone, HTC, Sony, etc...  The truth is that no matter what you buy, something newer, brighter, cooler and higher tech will come out the next week.

iPhone is a bit of a status phone in my opinion.  It is nice, but there are better phones out there currently in my opinion.  If you do buy a phone, and you are close to Hong Kong, you will save a bit of money by buying it there rather than here in China.

Honestly, it depends on what you want to use your phone for.  If you're looking for status, ease of use, and your primary concern is playing Angry Birds, get an iPhone.  If you want power, the ability to actually do stuff, and flexibility, get something else.

I'm personally waiting for the Windows 8 phones to come out because the stats and abilities (if they work as promised...  Hmm...  Microsoft...  But pretty happy with Win7) they are supposed to have would be incredibly useful and a game changer in the mobile market.

Personally, I hate Apple and would never buy any of their products (had tho throw that in Xinyuren Laughing out loud ) but the best thing to do is follow this advice:

I know people who love their iPhones, people who love their HTC, people who love their Samsung, etc.  Do some comparative shopping and see what features are important to you. Depends on how you want to use your smartphone.  Android is a bit more "techie" but highly customizable (like a pc - you can even overclock your phone's processor with an Android OS - and Google encourages stuff like this - they WANT you to jailbreak your phone!) where iOS and iPhones are pretty much "what you see is what you get" except for the ability to add applications.

Except the fact that the iPhone applications are really great, there are many problems that sill need to be solved:
1) phone signal is excessively bad with iPhone compared to other smart phones. It's possible to improve it, but you need to jailbreak your phone
2) iPhone doesn't have a standard international guarantee. You need to purchase an additional guarantee. If you buy your iPhone in China, get to travel to Europe and have a problem, they won't fix it.
3) Many useful applications (such as to improve the iPhone board, icons, systems) can only be obtained by jailbreaking.
4) For reasons behind my understanding, it seems that because of the different kind of network used in US, Europe and China, you iPhone may freeze. Also, if you change SIM Card from another country.
5) Apple is pushing the US government to issue a law that will make jailbreaking and unlocking illegal.
6) To use iPhone, you need iTunes. However, if you don't have a recent computer, iTunes won't work on it and therefore your iPhone cannot be connected to your computer.
And, yes, I have an iPhone. It was a gift from my wife.
For the other smart phone, I don't know that much. But I would be indeed interested to try the Samsung Galaxy, HTC and Nokia.

Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3.
