Q: The Hunan zombies are heading home

Finally. I see then with their suitcases and huge bags everywhere today. I can stay with the Cantonese who are probably the only Chinese born with a brain.

I have a bad feeling about this year.

I suspect that many will prefer getting their relatives into the city rather than going back to the countryside. This is from what I read on the Internet and also from the Hukou figures. Many of those "Hunan zombies" have now acquired a Cantonese Hukou making them for all intents and purposes Cantonese people. I wish I was kidding but I'm not.

And the many posters I see outside reminding for instance that "fireworks are forbidden" (they existed before, but not as much as this year and the phrasing is obviously intended for dumb audiences) also lead me to believe that the government is expecting the same things.

Hope I'm wrong.

Are Cantonese really that much different? Most immigrant communities abroad were started by Cantonese, but they didn't exactly make a good impression.

Is it one of those situations where Cantonese who emigrate are weird outcasts, and the ones at home are gems in comparison? You're not the first to speak highly of Cantonese; I'd just like the differences explained to me...

RiriRiri:

No, they're not that great. When I think of Cantonese the things that come in mind is lazy, calculating, backstabbers and superstitious. But at least they're not much of money obsessed control freaks and they've got Hong Kong to put some glitter on their culture, for a while at least.

In a word... you know... It's all a matter of lowering your expectations to the right scale.

hi2u:

The shouting Chinese stereotype came from Cantonese. Just think of a typical Chinese accent impersonation, it probably mimicks Cantonese.

coineineagh:

In other words, foreign influence in Cantonese culture that mellowed their backward tendencies ever the slightest, causing expats to see them as the *best* Chinese. I get it. Most mainlanders (han) speak of triad killings when they talk about Cantonese, though I must respect their ability to resist government ordinances, violently if necessary. China needs more confident people. Crooks will do in a pinch.

They are not super awesome especially compared to other East Asians, they are still Chinese, but they are less painful to live with than other Chinese.
