Ok, first tips, you want to go to "Paris" then "Germany" and "Italy"... You see that, now I'm helping you go to real places! Laughing out loud Your welcome! Wink October gets cold in those places and camping isn't a good idea after October (you mentioned you wanted to camp/backpack in Europe) So I would change your plans if you're going to go between October and May. You may want to work a little more on your oral English and your listening skills (assuming you don't speak French, German or Italian)... Also note the French tend to not like speaking English (long story)... Laughing out loud

equipment, get a good warm down filled sleeping bag, worse thing is being cold and trying to sleep, also wrap evrything in plastic bags,,if you get wet it will be days before your things dry out.
and autumn and winter will be cold,,OK for hostels,, not camping,,not sure if I would advise a woman to camp on her own any where
I'm in Canada and after Spt comes, boom can't go swimming any more,,days already getting shorter,,after mid Nov even my sled dogs want in the igloo

You have to remake your question or detail more.
Firstly for how long you will stay over there?
Second, any budget??
Third, what is/are the must places you wanna visit? I mean those ones that whatever u do you dont wanna miss.
After that I think more people will be able to help u.

Shirley,

I highly recommend getting a Eurail pass. That's what I did many years ago; just jump on one train after another as you visit different European countries. Very convenient. Get a map of Europe..plan your itinerary..pack your backpack and go! If you can, travel in off-season (not summertime) as hotel/motel/youth hostel rates will be cheaper. You'll find out WHAT THE REAL WORLD IS LIKE..NOT JUST CHINA!!!!!

Happy travels!

If your going camping as a single female then probably France is the least dangerous. They have a lot of camp sites, indeed most towns / cities have municipal camp sites in the town and they are often as cheap as 100RMB a night.

Try doing a few internet searches try something like 'backpacking in France' and you should come across the sites the gap year backpackers use, go to those, they'll be cheap and as they'll be popular you'll have some company. Safety in numbers.

Also as voltasingh said, check the Euro rate and be VERY careful, when Greece defaults which it will, my best guess is sometime early 2013, but it could be anytime, there is a high chance the exchange rate will change dramatically and you could lose a lot of cash.

I would plan on using Pounds Sterling, or Dollars and change them in small amounts as and when needed. Perhaps get an international currency account, (if you can in China) and use that, it would be safer than carrying cash, especially if you're camping.

change the euro currency in China...here you pay around 8 RMB/Euro..last spring festival when i tried to change the cash (though not every bank does it) the price ranged from 10-12RMB/Euro....

then I used CCB debit card with Union Pay logo...no problem to withdraw cash from most of ATMs...I just paid official conversion rates of that bank...

As LAR said, if you check the Eurorail or www.bahn.de (they have english site also) you can see discount packages for rail connections between different countries.....

I presume that all the ones providing you big advises about your trip to Europe are all guys, and usually a guy backpacking around Europe is not the same as a girl, especially if it's a Chinese girl.

I may be old daddy style, but my advice is that you don't take your trip too lightly. China is certainly not a really safe place in terms of food an water quality, but at least in terms of personal security it is. You can take the metro, bus or taxi at any time of the night, you're still quite safe even being a girl. That is not the case in most part of European countries.

So, you want backpacking...

1) better if you do it together with a friend (a male will be better)

2) in most part of European countries, you can do backpacking in the mountains for a couple of days : a guide is provided and you can also join other people in your journey and share the same adventure. It's a tough experience, and again think that sometimes you have to walk for 20 km a day.

3) for your safety, always try to get in touch daily with somebody at the same time of the day (text messages, or other) so that relatives know more or less where you are.

You won't see that many European girls backpacking alone (except if they are running away) as they know the risks that go with this kind of adventure.

Anyway, if you have only the Chinese nationality, I don't think a European embassy or consulate will grant you a visa while you don't have a fixed destination (what backpacking implies) and don't have anybody to provide a guarantee for your time in Europe.

But that's only my opinion. I don't know your skills or your abilities so I can't judge you. But by experience with other Chinese girls, including my wife, who wanted to do one trip in the mountain in Switzerland, well, they were already exhausted after one hour of walk. So think twice about your adventure. Going to backpack in Europe is not like going to Sheshan mountain where everything is paved and with rope around you. It's a wonderful, interesting experience...but also sometimes dangerous.

My main advice with traveling is to make your travel plans carefully, so that you arrive in each destination in the day-time. Bus stations, train stations and the like are notorious for thieves and criminals who are looking for someone to take advantage of. Also you won't find putting a tent up in the dark easy, I promise you. Good luck and stay safe.
