Why would you wish such a thing?

all that happens is somebody ends up dead and they are usually some poor soul that happened to be going about their business in the wrong place at the wrong time until some ass hole does them harm.

be careful what you wish for

anyway I think one will buy the other out.

i agree with what you said but you have to read the title.  No where in those nineteen words that i have implied i wish for war.  With the seriousness of the situation, somebody has to crack a joke.

I really do not think it will come to war. Japan has a treaty with the U S in which the U S is obligated to defend Japan in the event of hostilities (I did not write the treaty) in effect firing on the Japanese is an act of war against the U S. I do not think China will risk collapse of their economy over this issue. This is a tactic to distract the masses. The 2 governments are not engaged in a meaningful dialog and have chosen to use the media back and forth to create a fervor in the general population so they are distracted from the real issues in their countries (Japan nuclear problems, China pending economic troubles).

mike695ca:

Yes US and Japan have a treaty ( or agreement ) or whatever but it all comes down to the wording of it. Would China, in defending its sovereignty, be an act of attack on Japan?? I dont have an opinion either way but I dont think the American people would be too thrilled about America joining another war over a freaking Island. There are loopholes where America could stay out of it.  The real question is...If there is war... how many people would leave???

My snowball in the freezer stands a better chance in hell than actual physical conflict over this matter.

Saber rattling and political posturing is all it is.  Too many intangibles involved.

The Chinese economy depends on trade with the US...Japan's sworn ally.

CharlieB summed it up the best.

Depending the result of the US election...I think war with Iran is far more likely.

USA do not have money to front in Asia (supply chain), and Japan alone will do nothing significant.

mattsm84:

Well, first, money hasn't got a whole lot to do with it. A nation's spending isn't really tied to revenue. Japan has had a debt that nearly doubles their GDP and they're still is able to pony up a substantial amount of money to buy the islands off of a family of Japanese citizens.

I don't think the US will involve itself militarily, but not because of logistics either. It'd be expensive, but then you have to understand that most of that money has already been spent.  Remember that US has military bases in Japan, the Philippines and South Korea and  that 60% of their naval fleet is already in the pacific ocean. It is entirely likely that the US already has more planes and ships in this part of the world than China currently does, to say nothing of the technology gap that exist between China's planes and ships and the US's planes and ships.

We can understand what is most likely to happen by looking at China's options. First, do nothing. They can't do that because it's a loss of face, and people in China would start to lose confidence in the government's ability to represent their interests on the world stage. They could try to take the islands by force, but then that could damage their relations with countries like Vietnam and the Philippines, with whom they have similar issues, and even then they'd have to hope that the US wouldn't intervene, in which case there is a good chance they'd lose.

What is much more likely to happen is that China or Japan, either independently or with the help of the US, will broker a diplomatic settlement where in the Chinese agree to purchase the island from Japan.
