Q: I just bought a new TV, and they won't let me open the box.

Bought it on Amazon, arrived today, but supposedly I am not supposed to open it until someone comes to 'install' it. Is this normal?

Not sure. I bought an SSD drive from JD.com and opened the box before signing the paper. I gave the delivery guy the drive back as it had fingerprints inside the plastic wrapping. We could be talking products in the same price category. Second attempt in online buying of SSD drive was from Amazon, also opened the package while delivery guy was there.

Of course a TV is a hugely complicated device that might fall on you and injure you, which Amazon China probably couldn't care less about.

My MIL bought a TV in a brick/mortar shop (concrete/mold really) I wanted to just carry it home, but that wasn't allowed, it had to be delivered.... service charge for delivery + installation was just shy of 100rmb.

my guess .. if you bought it and have at least an inkling of what you bought, or what you are doing......better off doing it yourself.

BHGAL:

think I got the bit about responsibility after the signature ..  my confidence in quality of delivered products is quashed with this small  blurb on this site

If they dropped it, you will wait a long time, no one will come.

The seller needs to show you the seal on the box is not broken. He will go through the specs printed on the box and compare it to the specs on the invoice. The seller needs your approval before he breaks the seal.

It's to prevent your "genuine" device being swapped with a copy while in transit.

The camera shop where I buy my gear from is similar, except it's a shop of course. You can buy a lens (for example) either Ki Bao or Guan Bao. Open box or closed box. The closed box stuff is more expensive. And you get a better shop guarentee included.

It's all to do with the suspicious mind of the Chinese buyer. Maybe the genuine parts have been swapped for copy parts, and the vendor is selling the genuine internals on evilbay.

That's my take on it anyway wink

It's a norm here. While I was in Sony store, also have to confirm with seller the seal is not broken, pay the money first and than he opened it front of me and explain all the things. When we receive express parcel, we need to sign and receive first, than we can open it. you can ask the delivery man to stay and see. if there is any complain, you can handle to him back and send it back. but on your own expenses, and negotiate it with your supplier. In your case, that's pretty ok to wait for them, just make sure you call them twice a day for the installation time update Smile

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
