I've gotten away with using my English name, or the pinyin version of it, for a long time but now I have to take it all a bit more serious with my new job which requires a lot of name-card giving and making guanxi. How do I go about getting a good-sounding Chinese name?

I don't know about Shanghai. But in my hometown which is a small backward place, there are several professional name stores Those guys know a lot about how to make a good name according to the traditional Chinese "superstitions". Their brands are usually like "命名轩" with a famous advertisement "伟人出庶家,美名扬天下" (means great people come from normal family backgrounds and their awesome names are well-known to everyone). I don't know about the price, maybe a few hundred Yuan? Or just 1 hundred? No idea haha.
Considering you're foreigner, in my opinion, the best Chinese name for a foreigner should not only be decent in Chinese, but also sounds similar with at least part of his/her original name. However it's sometimes hard to find a really good name that meets the requirements. So some foreigners' Chinese names have nothing to do with their origin name pronunciation. But so what? As long as it's cool.
Good luck with finding your proper Chinese name.
Mine is 王明山 。
But nothing professional about it LOL.
My gf says its stupid ahahah.
But its easy to write or remember.
is 欣雅(xin ya) a good one for you ? 欣(pleasant) 雅(elegant)
Best thing to do, ask your colleagues. They will be able to come up with a name I'm sure. People on here are no good because they don't know your real name.

That, and the temptation to give something embarrassing is there too....

chinese are taught that women are disabled. but i made this post to show, that it is us men who are truly disabled.

There is no doubt in my mind that you, personally, are mentally disabled.
Maybe I can give you a Chinese name if I know more about your english and info, because I think this Chinese name should reflect your English name your personality.

I think it's supposed to be a bit of fun but it appears to work quite well.
try dropping a handful of silverware on a tile floor...
I know it might not fit a girl, but it doesn't get more serious than 查克 诺里斯
Best advice I've seen is look at the root meaning of your real name and find a Chinese name with a similar root meaning, if that's possible.
Why not go with the Chinese equivalent of Lolitta: Luo Li Ta (pronounced 'Law Lee Tar')? You don't need to worry about the tones, just go with what sounds natural, not every name has to have some daft meaning. It has a nice ring to it. If anyone asks, you can tell them you took it from 'Lolitta', the name of your favourite film about a pedophile, and that in Italian it translates as 'daddy complex'. Kidding.
Normally when chinese students ask me or if someone asks me to give them an English name I will chat with them to see what name they like first. That way I'm not the one making all the decisions and we are actually cooperating together.
I believe this can work both ways. If you are familiar with some chinese names that you like just use it. Afterall, if you don't like the name you are given you might not feel good about it anyways. So, although I know your knowledge of names in chinese are limited find one that you like and stick with it.
