Q: I need some general advise on working legally in Shenzhen
Hi,
Thanks in advance for your time if your reading this. I would guess that I could have spent more time scouring the internet for answers to my questions, but I know regulations change all the time and I would like information from people in Shenzhen.
Basically, I'm looking for a way to teach English in Shenzhen legally (or as close to it as I can) and not have to pay and renew a tourist visa every month. I've thrown my resume around and I think I'll have no problem making good money as I'm a qualified teacher in America and have the white face that everyone is looking for. My initial thought was to get a Z visa, but the only jobs i've seen that offer one require me to work close to 40 hours a week (I count any office hours as work because c'mon you got to pay me to be there) and the pay basically comes out to around 50rmb an hour- thats like American minimum wage. Is there a way to get a Z visa where I only have to work say weekends and have the time to fill my weekdays with the more lucrative VIP lessons?
I know I'll probably get some heat for this, but am I better off to just take a job for a bit to get a Z visa and then bail when I get the residency permit? Or buy a F visa? Or enroll in a school to get an X visa?I realize there is a lot of ill will towards people doing this from people who have the Z visas, but I'm really just asking for general advise. I don't want to cause any problems, I want to do things the right way, but I don't want to work for 50rmb an hour when I could get 3-6 times that amount.
If I'm breaking any rules with these questions please let me know or take it down.

some provinces will let you get z visa out of hong kong, not sure about shenzhen. in shandong you can.
I will throw a "monkey wrench" into your question, because it is evident you are not familiar with the LAW. A work visa (substituted within 30 days of entering China by obtaining an FEC, a work and residence permits) is tied to whomever employees you, and you can only work legally for them. If you do private tutoring, and the school is not involved, you will be working illegally.
Now, a solution could be that you form a WOFC to teach Engish, get a Z visa with that, then offer your services to schools and do tutoring on your free time.

A WOFC or WOFE (Wholly Owned Foreign Enterprise) is, in my opinion, like a boat. It's a great way to spend money on something you won't use or might use very little. I'd suggest you come on a Z visa, then they change it to an RP/FEC, and you can look around after that. I know people who started a WOFE to teach and they would love to get rid of it. Maybe later, much later, on the WOFE.
Besides, if you blow $10,000 on a WOFE you won't have that money to spend on a girlfriend or guitars. Or is that girlfriendS and guitars?
Don't plan on getting a Z visa and later dropping that job for more lucrative private work because the school who sponsored your Z visa and Residence Permit will cancel the RP when you quit. Then you're illegal.
Besides, you might not find as many VIP clients as you'd like. I'm not saying you can't, but these things don't always work out the way we plan. I do privates and sometimes I have none and other times I have too many, but the regular job (the one with the Z visa and Residence Permit) salary and apartment sure are useful. And another thing, some schools don't care if you do work on the side as long as their work comes first. Maybe you could find a middle school (the kids will figuratively kick your ass, but who cares?) or high school or university with low hours. Oh wait, if you're a qualified teacher maybe you know about middle school hahahaha.
Yes that's right guys I do privates. It's fun (or I quit), I can use the money and it's actually hard to tell people "no" sometimes, especially on the occasions when they ask repeatedly and the pay is good. You might casually mention it to the school, but if you get them involved they'll want to get paid and then you necessarily make less.
Keep looking for a school that can sponsor a Z visa. Either one that pays well or one with less working hours. If you work part-time you will need written approval from the school that sponsored your visa. It would be illegal otherwise. The choice is yours.
When you go to your next interview ask for a higher salary. Don't underestimate yourself.
