Q: I never been to a cheaper place of China.
I am a native Chinese,all my 25 year old life is spent in some rich cities,never been to any poorer places in China.You westerners spent your dollors here in China(a country which is much cheaper compared back to your home).I also wanna feel the way of spending the money on a cheaper place.I am planing a travling in the next 2 monthes.Any good places to go for me?I am alone,so that place must a safe place for a young lady to have fun.A place will have many yummy food also( I like food very much,pig me).
As a Chinese girl you know in the poor places there are no men with IPAD's and Ferarri's! What ever will you do if the richest man in the poor town is driving a 1967 John "Lee" Deer tractor?
Don't know if its cheaper, but what I want to see is Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Yangshou and the area was nice, I like rafting on the river. they have that big show on the lake every night.

Nevermind, when did you go? I taught in Vietnam three years ago and never noticed any overt anti-China sentiment. They would make the occasional dark references to invasions 30 years ago and 1,000 years ago, but nothing major.
I arrived again in Vietnam two months ago and things have clearly escalated over the past few months. Kids as young as six tell my colleagues "we hate China! They want to invade us!"
Teenagers, when asked "where will you be in ten years?" in class, give their answers then add "unless China invades us. China wants to invade us. We hate China!"
My adult students noticed I'd bought a few pairs of shoes and complimented them, then added darkly "but they were probably made in China." They were happy when I told them I have my clothes tailored using Vietnamese materials.

I think the Chinese treat the Vietnamese bad and always have in terms of respect.

The irony is that so much of Vietnam's northern classical culture comes from China - the tea houses, old streets, pagodas and temples are virtually the same, and most of the traditional belief systems, myths and holidays spring from the same source material, although hundreds of years of lived culture obviously changes things considerably.
I feel I've seen more of traditional China by poking around the old places of Hanoi than I ever saw in China. I'd never tell the Vietnamese that, though, they might lynch me!

Yes, there are a lot of very poor people in Vietnam. There are also a lot of very poor people in China - is your idea of a fun holiday hanging out in a poor village? You can find that in either country.

very cheap places usually do not offer too much "fun", but when You talk about food ... oh yes!
want to have fun in "cheap places"? - better go with some locals, then You can have quite safe fun in every place
where is cheap place? everywhere.
go into the bus, and drive 100-500 km from "big city" toward rural areas, get off the bus in city that is obviously small, but have (relatively) clean, and (relatively) well illuminated streets

The trouble with travelling to 'cheap' places is that all too often what you save on spending money you more than sacrifice on the cost of travel.
Do an internet search for "Gap year" "Backpackers" and you should get some interesting results.
Personally I would stay in China and find some more remote, less touristy places that way you save most of your travel costs.
Tibet, Xinjiang and Guilin, three places i want to go most in China.
Outside of big cities, there isn't much to do. If you like hiking or taking long walks, then go somewhere with really nice scenery. However, if it's too far from where you live, you'll spend most of your time traveling. Have you ever thought about traveling outside of the country? If you go somewhere only because it's cheaper, I think you'll be disappointed, so try to find some place that has lots of things to see or do.
You really want to go to another country really to feel artificially rich rather than out of an interest in the culture and in travel? Well, if that's really what you want, try Thailand. The north of the country is very cheap and very beautiful and the food is some of the best anywhere.

I'd never go to a country just because it's cheaper. Heck, I was planning on teaching in Korea, but I changed my mind. I'm going to teach in Japan. I'll have to wait almost a year to go, but that gives me plenty of time to study Japanese (which I have been doing as much as possible every day). I was actually terrified of traveling alone in China. I can read some Japanese, now I can speak a little more than before, so it wouldn't be a big deal to travel, even between cities. And the subway was a piece of cake. I just kind of lived in China, I wasn't part of it. But that won't happen to me in Japan. No, I will learn the language, I will speak it, I will explore Japan. I will sing Japanese songs at the karaoke. And I'll still be saving a decent amount of money. I'll be trying to get into the JET program, but if that fails, there are other companies.

Oh, that sounds absolutely amazing! I'd absolutely love to go to Japan, and you'll have a major head start if you already speak some of the language.
Are you thinking Tokyo or one of the other cities?

Well, if I make it into the JET program, I don't get to choose where I end up. They let you write your top 3 choices, but that doesn't mean you'll get that. The JET application process is a bit tedious and it's the most difficult program to get into, but they pay the best, so it's worth the trouble. They also begin applications in the fall, when all other companies will begin in the spring, so that's why it's ok if I don't get into JET. I would know if they want to interview me by January, and the interviews are in February, so by March or April I'd know if I got in for sure.

Yeah, I know all about that. I've read about Japanese culture since I was in high school. I've learned a little Japanese since I was in high school, but I never seriously studied it until now. I visited for 2 weeks, and there were just soooo many things to do and see. China is strange, but it's kind of casual, you don't have to try hard for people to accept you. Japan is going to be a challenge, which is why I'm serious about studying the language this time. And I'll probably have to try harder to look nice on a daily basis so I don't look like a slob. And of course, I know I will always be a 外人. I'm not trying to be Japanese, that's not possible. But I can learn some manners. haha
Also, do you mean 'a place cheaper than China', or a cheaper place of (i.e. inside) China? It's confusing, that's why a lot of the advice here is giving you domestic travel tips and a lot is giving you domestic travel tips.

That's right..it is much cheaper in CERTAIN/MANY instances and YOU SHOULD BE THANKFUL FOR THAT!!!!!!!!!!! Regarding your comment about foreign expats spending dollars in China..what the **** are you talking about? We spend RMB just LIKE YOU!!!!!! :( Sure, some of us exchange American dollars,etc. upon coming back from holiday,etc.)

Europe is expensive, but it's surely worth going there. If I were you I would save some money for a decent trip to a good place than settle for something average/uninteresting but cheap.

I've been to 25 countries in Europe and they are all different and interesting. Costs are about the same, the further south you go, the men will treat you like sh.t. In the north you will receive a little more respect. I personally will marry you tomorrow!!! But then I am much too old for you!!

Traveler's tip: Join www.couchsurfing.com . You can find people all over the world willing to let you stay at the house in an extra room on or their sofas for one night or even a week, as long as you're a good guest and you help keep the place clean and buy food.
I live in Beihai, Guangxi, and it's pretty cheap. There's an ok-looking beach where it's safe to swim, you can buy noodles for around 5-6 rmb, and beer is about 5-10 rmb at most bars and restaurants. A meal at a nice seafood restaurant, for one small girl, is about 20-30rmb. There are some pretty nice night clubs, and it's fairly safe to be alone when you're walking. There are some interesting historical sites from when Dutch and English traders were here, and the people are fairly friendly...but they speak a language no one except themselves can understand.
you can go to xinjiang, urumqi, laos,thailand, lanzhou , shandong, cities. or travel toward north western cities of china. travel like poor people in very cheaper trains, experience it... rich lady......... be thankful...
rich china, cheaper places in America, or England.......... wow ! i guess you have travel all around the world as you find china more cheaper for americans... pretty and alone lady, all american coming to china have saved and have made some saving in their life time so they carry that money with themself. in this current economy turn down do not imagine american are thinks china is cheaper or you think america is expensive , its almost equal if you multiply it.

In any case; there are poor parts, yes, but it's developing fast - and a lot of things here are not any cheaper than China, especially in the major cities.

Typically poorer does equal cheaper, but not always, Thailand for example is a place that's remained consistently cheap over the decades even as the country has developed over that time.
I think the combination of lower GDP/person and stability equals cheapness to travel.
If it's cheap and safe, then you can travel and live local - in places that are poorer but have safety issues, then you'd need to change your habits to compensate and would end up spending comparatively more.
