Q: I work on the top floor, why is there always someone in the elevator when I get on?

Idiot me, I step aside to let the person off.  Oh no, they look at me in disbelief because they are waiting for me to get on.  I didn't know we had lift attendants.  Apparently, I took too long because they decided they need to hit the close door button.  But, I counter with the down button and that reopens the door.  What an imbecilic lot!

When I lived in Linyi, the building where I worked had eight extremely slow elevators and one heck of a lot of people who worked there.

Getting in the elevator involved the dance of overfilling, one person hopping on and off to stop the overweight buzzer from buzzing.

Aside from people always pushing both the 'up' and 'down' buttons regardless of which way the were going (thankfully, there is no 'left' and 'right' options) adding to the time it would take to get to the top floor and work its way back down - the big issue was that due to the sheer number of people in the building, if you didn't get on at the 8th floor and go up when, in fact, you wanted to go down, the elevators would be full.

wagon:

Yeah, I understand crowded buildings and such.  This building is small-6 stories-and I work off hours.  I leave at 10:45 some days, 3:30 on others.  I think it has more to do with the mental capacity of the user.

Chinese don't understand signs on the elevator's control panel, because they aren't marked by characters.

I behave similar with Chinese washing machine, where I'm staring at characters. I recognize correct cycles/buttons by observing machine during the wash. First month, at least.

'Exit &entry' function is very confusing in China everywhere that's warranted for normal operation.

I guess, they go by logic: 'one must enter first in order to be able to exit later'. That's why in elevators, U-bahn and elsewhere 'entries' come before the 'exits'.

They aren't aware these two functions must be turned around, when applied to two or more persons in confined spaces.

My office is at the 13th floor. I usually walk the stairs. It takes 5 minutes and it's a good little exercise. Besides, I REALLY cannot understand the morons waiting 10 minutes the elevator for going up (or down) 1 floor.

I used to walk down from the 15th floor for lunch.  There was no chance of getting on for at least 1/2hr.

Because the people here are dumb and press both up and down buttons, it's that easy.

I can tell you why, that's easy.

It's not because they don't understand how the arrows work. That's absurd, maybe some peasant's first visit to a mall with an elevator but not in an office building.

It's just that when you worry about getting a spot on the elevator, you get one when you can.

If you're a selfish little person on the 6th floor of a 15 floor building and going down, you have to worry about the people on the 9 floors above you filling up the elevator. So you hit the up and down buttons so no matter which way it's going you have the best chance of getting on.

The problem is that once this starts to happen it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. Everyone on every floor pushes both buttons ensuring that the elevator is full by the time it gets back down.
