Depends where you're coming from. Coming from England I find life here cheap as chips. Minimal work for good rewards. Can afford to cover my costs without stress. But this is all compared to life in England where you have to take double shifts to afford a packet of crisps.

Rent, depends on the city, small city nice apartment 1500Y, electricity 150 to 600Y a month, street food- bowl of noodles 10Y, meal in restaurant for 2 to 4 people 120Y, clothing doesn't seem cheap to me and large sizes are hard to find, taxi short ride 10Y, bus 1Y, telephone maybe 100Y a month,beer 35Y.groceries are pretty cheap.

The visible costs are relatively low. The hidden costs can be astronomical.

If you find a job that provides accommodation and utilities, it is possible to live a reasonable life on as little as 3000 to 4000 rmb per month. The "hidden extras" are the killer!

You can live very cheaply, but it's not because everything is cheaper, it's because you have a market for low quality, low cost offers.

* You can rent a place for 1000 RMB/months in a 2nd tiers city, but it will be in noisy location, a small trap for a window, in a derelict district & building far from every convenience. Ho, and no heating, so in winter you will be like the locals, clothed like an eskimo inside your home. Keeping the place warm will be expensive, it's not insulated at all. But for 7500 RMB/months, you get 100m2 in a nice place, maybe an individual house, or a fancy flat.

* You can eat for 10 RMB/days, but it will be same old boring food ie. tasteless rice with the cheapest vegetables available of questionable origin. But for 50 RMB/days, it will be local, varied, tasty and ... safe, maybe ? For 200 RMB/days, I guess you can approximate what you would eat back home.

* You can get cheap Internet, but it will be near unusable. But if you buy quadruple, it will be usable. Pay for a VPN, and you can actually use Internet.

Depends on which city you wanna live here. I'm living in Beijing, most of money have been spending on accommodation. Food and traffic here is relatively cheap.

Here is a quick summary at a per monthly cost :

1st Tier cities about 5000-6000 RMB

2nd Tier cities about 3000-4000 RMB

3rd and lower about 1500-3000 RMB

This is for reasonable comfort and eating out at mediocre to good places. If you expect very high standards(like businessmen) or are a bar dweller, expect these numbers to double or so...

I highly suggest getting a Chinese girlfriend/boyfriend that is good at bargaining and identifying rip offs and you could save yourself a good 500-1000 RMB per month.
