Q: Is Ice Skating on Lakes Safe?

my friend invited me ice skating outside of the city in her home town , on a lake... she says that she used to do it all the time as a kid and I can even borrow skates from her (her dad's because my feet are waay too big for hers)...

Have any of you ever tried this? I'm extremely apprehensive

It's safe, but obviously only as long as the ice is thick enough.

I personally wouldn't take any Chinese assurance that it's safe seriously unless I could see for myself the ice was good and thick.

I have local friends who have told me about skating when they were children but increased pollution has meant that it is becoming a rare occurrence.

when you are there, ask how long the lake has been iced over and watch to see if locals are actually also skating.

TBH, it might be just a generous offer without any follow-through. this happens a lot.

It is a way of gaining face without having to do anything.

but you never know wink

Ask this question. Back home, there is a dude putting up a sign saying the ice is thick enough or not. In China people are know for not giving a shit and lack professional skills. The only way of knowing if the ice is safe in China is to go onto it. Do you want to be a test dummy ?
