As far as I'm aware it never did happen. At least that's the impression I get.

I wonder if China had opened up in '78 without the CR. Or if the lack of such a traumatic experience would perhaps skew the momentum towards Mao and his succession plan instead of Deng Xiaoping. The cult of Mao would continue in a closed off and backwards China, and Hong Kong would be properly fucked in '97.

Edit: here's an interesting discussion on alternate history http://www.alternatehistory.com/discussion/showthread.php?t=230791

The pollution would be horrendous, prices of everything dirt cheap, foreigners still the evil imperialists that they still portray... and the over-crowding would be unbelievable!

However, there'd be a lot more sparrows around, and if we're lucky, a better standard of education and some 'culture'

Maybe, just maybe, by not killing off the intellectuals, CCP wouldn't be so powerful now, because there'd be a lot more questioning from the educated elite, and perhaps China would be full democracy by now (probably skewed, but still more recognisable as a democracy - probably US-style!). Although, I'd also suggest that with the number of those educated elite who went to other countries for their education, we might be lucky enough to have China more democratic and socialist.

if red guard bullies didnt comprise the elite in this country, people would be more rational and sober in their pursuit of money and family. people who speak up for fairness and sociable behaviour wouldnt be ganged up on and punished. perhaps concepts like facesaving and bribe relationships would be less relevant, or at the very least concealed, as such things should be. the term "brave" would not be derogatory.
