Q: If entered China under an S-1 visa, do I need the RP from PBS?

Jesus, I am so confused now  that I do not know what to do short of going to my local PSB and ask them the question.

When my visa was granted at the Chinese Embassy in Washington, DC, in my mind  I was thinking I had to do that.  But when I picked up my passport with the visa, I asked the question to the Embassy Official, who said "no, your visa is like the former "L" visa, with number of entries and days of stay, no need of RP from PSB".

Yet, I read here of members with S visa an RP.

Can anyone with an S-1 visa give me an honest answer if RP is required or not?.  And if so, what documents I will need to bring?

Now that's strange. I haven't applied for it myself but from what I read the S-1 should work like a Z visa: as an entry pass for getting a RP.

What is the duration of stay and number of entries? I'd expect 1 and 000.

HappyExPat:

1 entry, 0 days stay.  I still think I should, and will go to PSB to find out.

Just as I thought. It means you have 30 days to go through the procedure of getting a RP. You're on a clock.

If you don't have that already, the first place I'd go is not the PSB but the place in your city where you can get the medical check done. It is what will take the longest.

Yeah my mate got the RP after entering China with the S1. Just go to the PSB and switch it over from S1 to RP.

Yes you do need a RP which you have to apply within 30 days of your arrival.

The documents required are:

1. your medical examination form

2. relation ship documents (attested by the embassy in your country)

3. staying documents provided by the host. (in my case, my wife's institution where she is studying)

4. police registration certificate

5. RP fees..

S1/S2 is issued to "Family members" of work Z and student X visa holders, including spouses, parents, children, spouses of sons or daughters, brothers, sisters, grandparents, grandchildren and parents-in-law, and to those who intend to go to China for other private matters. The other difference between S1 and S2 is that S1 allows a stay of more than six months, while S2 is issued for shorter visits. S1 holders must apply for a Temporary Residence Permit within 30 days of entry. The residence permit can be granted with a minimum of 90 days and a maximum of five years. S2 holders must stay in China during the period on the visa.

S1 itself is single entry, but you are required to apply for a residence permit within 30 days after entry with the S1. The residence permit works as multiple entry thereafter within its validity.

Within 24 hours of arrival, you should take your passport (with visa inside) and housing contract (or other papers, if you own the property) to the local PSB office, or paichusuo. Check with your landlord, property management office or a neighbor if you don’t know where this is – they should know. Some compounds even have their own paichusuo.

At the PSB, there may be a desk marked clearly for foreigners registering (though they may use the word “alien” to indicate your otherness). In areas where there foreigners are a rarity, you’ll likely just wait to be seen at a regular desk. All you should need to do is present your passport, visa and housing papers, and the police will complete a form for you to sign.

In some cases, the police may be more demanding. They may ask you to bring your landlord: If so, this may be because of a particular issue they wish to discuss with the landlord (which may be unrelated to you). You won’t really have any choice but to try to comply with them.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
