Speaking purely in terms of body language, for us there's nothing that counts more in the way of trust as someone who makes eye contact. Look away and it's a sign of shame, distrust, embarrassment, that you're hiding something, etc.
So if that's really not the same thing at all here, how do they 'feel' trust in body language? And what are job interviews like? Everyone looks out the window?
Trust is only something that exists (barely) between family members and intimate friends. You won't find it anywhere else.
i can accept that different cultures may have different body languages. but the fact that chinese culture is based a lot on being dishonest, cheating and scamming, leads me to believe that looking someone in the eye as a sign of being honest maybe as universal as smiling.
Hmm. Maybe not eye-contact but maybe an I-Pad? hehe couldn't help myself
Is there a physical sign of trust in China? Honestly, eye contact to me does not say trust, although it can say respect (or disrespect) or it can be a sign of friendliness. Looking away can also just mean a person is shy, which happens to me a lot here.
I think that if you have a recommendation from a common friend that really goes a long way here. Having someone put in a good word for you is, like eye contact, something that can be faked. At the same time, it does make for a slightly different culture and way of doing things.
I look at the tops of mens heads, I think its a psychological way of showing I'm above them, or if they are about my height I look at their forehead, or focus my eyes on something behind them while looking at them.Try this when talking to someone focus your eyes not on there face, but behind them, look right through them, you will make them uncomfortable. I do this here because I don't trust anyone.
