Q: If I apply for a new visa, but get denied, will I lose my current visa?
Let's say I go to Hong Kong, and I screw up and don't have the right documents to apply for the new visa. Do they cancel the current visa, leave me stranded and only able to return home? This has scared me, so I've never actually attempted to change my Visa due to this possibly irrational fear.
I just want to make sure I'll be able to use my current visa if I mess up, or get denied for some reason or another.

I previously applied for a work visa in HK, but did not have the correct documents. So they gave me a 30 day tourist visa instead, so I could go back to China and get the correct documents. I would assume the tourist visa could be renewed twice in China.
Of course, I had to make a fresh application for the tourist visa, which meant staying in HK for an extra day.

Was your previous visa cancelled immediately, or already expired? Mine is about to expire, but... yeah.

It expired the day after I applied for my work visa, which was the day I applied for the new tourist visa.
Even if it was cancelled after applying for the work visa, there was still no problem applying for a tourist visa to go back.
As we all know, in China there are no uniform rules, but if the visa is about to expire, I think you are just going to have to risk it.
I think the odds are strongly in your favour to at least get the tourist visa to come back, as long as you don't overstay your current visa.
If you're that worried about it, why not use an agent? No doubt more expensive, but it seems they have the connections to get around this issue.
I notice that they tend to say if you're denied F visa or similar, they they'll give you an L...
Why don't you go to the PSB and get an extention on your visa?
Not necessarily. Your current visa will be canceled if and when a new one is issued. But if you can not successfully get a new one because further documentation is required, under normal circumstances your existing visa will not be canceled.
But if for example, fraud is discovered in your application or documentation, then your current visa could be canceled too.
