If its a work visa, and you have a foreign experts certificate. That part is important. As explained to my by the government dude while i was renewing mine. Some teachers and other workers get an alien employment certificate instead, which is essentially the same thing except that you need to have the expert certificate to add your family onto your visa.

Hotwater:

Sorry Mike but you're wrong! If you have the standard (non-teaching) alien employment permit (work permit) then you are also entitled to apply for a visa for your wife and children. From memory it is the S1 or S2 visa that then gives them a residence permit.

Mike is right too. But this guy must have an address in China that is registered and invite letter that allows his family to get a S visa in their home country. I like having my son on my expert cert. Much more easier and less hassle.

@hotwater. Perhaps man, thats why i told everyone my source. So i guess that dude was wrong haha. All i know is 2 months ago in SZ i was renewing and i asked directly " What is the difference between the two?" And he said that the only real difference is that the foreign experts can also be used to bring your family. So i passed that one. Sorry to misinform anyone.

@ Javi, I speak up sometimes too much and right now (shaking my head as a fellow family guy)..Are you thinking that you can just come into China and find a job and then get a legal visa to work the next following week? Did you know you have to get a Z visa in Your Home country or in Hong Kong if lucky? Don't be stupid and rush out here with your family, thats coming here half cocked. Get a job first, wait a month or two to make sure you don't run into many issues.

There is always a surprise and the "I didn't know" stuff that will popup here in China. So please don't be a fool. Don't even come here if you haven't found a job yet, it's too risky, and you wanna drag your family into it? Get your job offer first, ask them to send you the doc's and official paper work that will allow you to get a Z visa in your home country and dependent visa for your family.

When you ask: " I don't know if my visa will allow me", Well which visa is that? Where are you getting it? and Which visa are you arriving in China on?

Lets try the smart and stupid visa arrival in China ranks:

1. Arriving on an L visa looking for work = F**Kin stupid, are you in poverty?...

2. Arriving on an M/F visa looking for work = Very foolish, (Hope you brought your BA.)
3. Arriving on a 30 days Z visa=  Smart father. ( Technically your family should be arriving with you.)

BTW a good company should have set this all up for you.

dimm2hcom:

Yes. You are right ! Try to get the job offer first before come to China else this will be kicked your ass in China. Apply Z visa need about 2-3 months time process. So better don't take this risk to bring your family member with.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
