I would imagine you can. Maybe immigration will ask you about it

dokken:

Remember it's not Thailand. If you overstay your visa. It won't be just a 30 dollar fine. It ll be spanked bottom time.

If you have a residence permit of course you can.

What if you're a consultant and you're on the road al the time? They aren't just going to tell you to fuck off with a month almost left.

They likely will say something though, just remind you.

Your issue may depend upon how you left your previous employer. Without more information about your situation, any answer is pure speculation.

For example; if you did a midnight run or something similar, your FEC may have been cancelled and word passed to Entry/Exit....or not. You see where I am going with this?

I want to expand on the OP's question. My current RP expires the 27th. I'm not getting back to China until the 24th.  I haven't been able to find any information on the rules regarding this.

dokken:

It means you are allowed to stay until the 27th

You'll need to hurry up and arrive to your city's PSB before or on 27th for the new extension.

It would be also wise to get info about that (return to China), before you went for vacation.

Usually I come back a couple weeks before it expires to get settled in and prepare for classes. Just need a longer vacation this summer to recuperate.

The RULES are, you are entitled to enter China any time prior to the expiry date of the visa. You must, also, LEAVE before that date!

So what's the problem here? Just because the dates are close???
