Q: If lenovo is such a great Chinese company, why do they make computers with a "Fn" key in the corner?
Computer keyboards are designed for practicality. In one corner you have the Esc key, in another you have the arrow direction keys, and in another you have tilde key (~) - these are all important keys (okay, I can't explain that last one, maybe is a programming thing.
Also important is the "Ctrl" key. For Windows, this key is important for everything: Ctrl +A, Ctrl +C, Ctrl +V .... oh yes, all good times. For shortcuts, this key is integral.
But on lenovo laptop computers, the bottom left key is not Ctrl like any other important laptop maker does, but "Fn". What the "Fn"? Function key is useless throughout my day. I do not use it all day long. Having a Fn key in the corner makes using a computer that much harder.
Why is there a Fn key in the Fn corner? For a great Chinese computer company, this is stupid decision by lenovo.

It only took me a couple of years when I switched from Dell to IBM Thinkpads to get used to it. My first Thinkpad was an IBM and it had the Fn key there too.
Apple does the same thing on their keyboards. It's because nowadays the top row of function keys commonly have two functions per key (like to increase/decrease screen brightness and volume) but when you really need F1 (for example) to register as F1 with the software you're using, you then would press fn-F1 together to get the true F1 function.
Keyboards made in the UK have the @ key above ' two keys to the right of L. As far as I know, other countries it's above 2. Keyboard stupidity is universal.

What Lenovo computer are you using? I have a state-of-the-art Lenovo backlit keyboard Z500. In the left hand bottom corner is the Ctrl key, followed by the Fn key, followed by the Windows key, followed by the Alt key, followed by the space bar.
It wasn't cheap at all and it's a damn good computer.
Honestly, I don't know of a brand that doesn't have its letdowns.
Except Toshiba, Toshiba laptops are undestroyable. And since they come from the Evil land of Evil, you'll never have to wait a second at their deserted service centers.
I agree with you and it's just a bad keyboard layout/design.
I haven't found a single person that actually prefers it when laptop manufs. do stuff like this.
It becomes a huge PITA when you have to switch between using the laptop and any other computer.
The best thing to do is just don't buy a laptop with a wonky keyboard layout. My girlfriend is very demanding about keyboard layouts and I am too. Unfortunately our demands are a bit different, my girlfriend demands an enter key that is double height and triple width. I demand an enter key that is single height and triple width.. I also demand a pipe key above it being double width and single height since I use it all the time in a Linux terminal but this directly conflicts with an enter key that is double height...
The best thing to do is to buy what fits.. We've both got our own keyboards and we both have our own laptops with the key layouts that we prefer. When I went shopping for laptops in Hong Kong, I specifically told the Lenovo rep that I need X,Y, and Z.. He showed me laptop after laptop that didn't have X, didn't have Y, didn't have Z or worse didn't have both of any.. I spent several hours there and looked at every laptop they had on display from $500 all the way up to $2200 and none of them fit my needs....
I went to the official Dell store in HK and told them what I needed and they took me over to a laptop and I bought it 10 seconds later.
Dell laptops might not have the best build quality, but if there's one thing they understand, it's that people hate wonky keyboard layouts.
IMO, the concept of adapting to fit a new keyboard layout is absurd.. They should be selling you laptops that meet your needs.
The Fn changes the 'function' keys to their secondary use, usually printed in a subtle color above the more prominent white letter font for the main function of the key.
Love my Fn key for screen caps.
Maybe the problem is the lack of a 'ctrl' key?
I'm jealous. If this is currently your biggest problem, you must be living large.
It may be useless for you, for others, it's a treasure.
