Q: If you found a stray animal in China would you keep it as a pet?

I know of at least one person that found a stray cat and kept it as a pet. Would you keep a stray animal as a pet?

No I wouldn't. First of all, I will only be staying in this city until July. Then I will go back to America. While I would love to have a pet, especially a puppy, it would not be fair to the animal, because I wouldn't be able to take it home with me. That would be a burden on my parents, and if I left it here, I would be very unhappy. Second, many animals here have not gotten proper vaccinations, while many strays in America would. That means they could have unexpected diseases. Third, I'm here in China to enjoy my life, and that means I want to travel from time to time. I can't do that if I have a pet because there is no one to look after it when I'm away.

I could come over on Wednesdays and wear my puppy costume.

I have always wanted a pet duck, but I have never seen a wild or stray duck here.  How can this be?

They ate them all.

You do not find wild or stray ducks because ducks are delicious (especially the feet and tongues)

Actually, the necks are simply awesome. So if you run across a flock of neckless ducks, you know I have been there.

I have kept a stray cat- she was in good condition and very loving. What we did was kept her at the vet's for a month so that they could observe her and give her all her shots and of course fix her. Unfortnately we lost her last year- after 6 loving years together. We're guessing she died at about 8 years old. I think that getting a stray is just about the same as actually buying a cat or dog here- most of the animals that they sell in the pet markets are pretty feral (no real contact with humans), they've been locked in a cage so long. I've really been wanting to get an older dog too- we have a small child so puppies are just too much trouble, but it's so hard to find older dogs for sale or adoption.

There's really no telling if the animal is in fact a stray. It might just be out for a stroll so it's best to not whisk away any animals you find on the street, especially if you're only in China for a short time.

I did, although they weren't strays.   They were in a street venders sack.  I couldn't believe they ate porcupines (hedgehogs) in China!  And I had never seen one in person.  Out of curiosity, I bought them.  My mistake!  They have more in common with mice than with hogssad...  only coming out at night (I let them roam freely around my apartment), not knowing what they ate (the internets said they eat tree bark), and hearing their prickly spines scraping my wood floor all night  led to me releasing them a few months later.  Now I want an armadillo.  Any of those in China?devil

Once when I was out for an early morning walk, I met a young female cat. I played with her a little and took some pictures. Two Chinese men from each side of the street came to talk to me, don't know what they said. They seemed pleased to see the cat. I left the little cat, but always wondered if those two men were telling me the cat tastes good with butter.

I like to leave crumbs out for the birds outside my window, and that's the closest I'd get to adopting a stray. Should a cat choose to adopt me (as our own back home did) then I'd think about it, but only if I was sure there'd be someone to take it after leaving China.

I have 2 cats that were rescue strays and they are both awesome.  There are a lot more stray cats in my neighborhood, but I can't take them all.
