Q: If you had the choice, where would you choose to be China's capital?
Beijing, despite historical importance, is a pretty poor choice for a capital in my books. I've never been there, but I have a funny feeling Nanjing would be a good bet. Dunno why though.
yes, nanjing used to be the capital, nanking, think it still should be, especially with all the belly aching they do about japan, use the martyr city for a capital and really play that victim card to the maximum.

Does it matter? I say assign a number to the thirty largest cities in China plus a wild card like ... Chongyi in Jiangxi Province, put all the numbers in a hat and draw one.
Does picking a new capital also involve finding a new name for Beijing, after all it cannot be called that if there is a new capital. ?
I would go for Xi'an, have some fresh warriors made, but out of kevlar.

it is just the Wade/Giles romanization of 北京, so it will still mean "North Capital"

Am I right in thinking "Peking" comes from "Beiping"? The name Beijing had for a time up until 1949? Could be wrong though.

Up until the 1950's Pinyin did not exist. Two chaps (Brits I believe) names Wade and Giles had made a system for writing Chinese with roman characters. In this system 北京 becomes Peking, in Pinyin it becomes Beijing. So despite being completely different, the two are in fact the same.

Thanks for clearing that one up. If they were "chaps" as you say, then they certainly were British.

they were from London and Oxford respectively, so in my book that would be pretty British.

Quite right sir. I was just joking about the word "chap" and how it (at least for me) carries connotations of the stereotypical English gentleman. Much in the way "fellow" also does.
Put it here in Daqing....please! Closer to North Korea. Further from the annoying Philippines. Next door to Russia. And hurry. I need a change.
If Hong Kong were an option I would say Hong Kong. I have never been to Shanghai not yet I plan to go there soon though, and from what I've heard, seen through images I would say SHanghai! 
Being the Middle Kingdom, somewhere between heaven and hell in a place called LimBo. LimBo is located in Sichuan, home to the Bo ethnic group, famous for hanging coffins. So, yeah. No cavorting with winged angels in the clouds or buried six feet under for the Bo, whose most popular family name is Lim.
So, I vote for LimBo... somewhere between heaven and hell...

D.C. makes NO bones about who is boss around here, there and everywhere. I thought LimBo would make a good capital, but D.C. outranks. No grey area there, buddy. Thumbs up, Mr T.
Somewhere in deepest, coldest Antarctica would be perfectly fine. It would give them more excuse to have banquets and drink baijiu to keep warm. Everyone would be a winner (apart from a few penguins I suppose).
