Q: If you had only one week to spend somewhere in China (Hong Kong included), where would you go?

My internship will done on November 30th, so I will have from Dec 1st until Dec 7th to some touring. I am indecisive about these places:
1. Hong Kong
2. Xian
3. Chengdu
4. Shanghai
5. Tibet

Could you help me with this process? Shy

If you are into Chinese history, I would go visit Xian ( the Silk Road and home to the Terracotta Army) and Tibet (spiritual reasons)
If you like shopping, then Hong Kong and Shanghai are your best choices.

Before you judge someone walk a mile in their shoes, that way you're a mile away and you have their shoes!

I depends what you are interested in.
Personally I think Hong Kong is incredible, but I probably have a biased opinion as I go there about 5 times a year.
It is very pricey compared to the mainland (ok, so is Shanghai and Beijing), but there is so much to see and do.
I would have to say it's my favorite city in the world (next to my hometown of course).

You're already in Beijing. There's a LOT of history in Beijing so you can get your fill of history there . One week vacay should be somewhere fun and exciting . That's either Shanghai or Hong Kong

Guilin and Yangshou are the most beautiful places I have been thus far, if you want the natural China experience. If you want to see things more like the West (boring), you can go to Shanghai and Hong Kong. The Fujian countryside is also gorgeous, but I do not recommend it for casual tourists. One week? 1 day in Guilin. take boat to Yangshou. 2 days in Yangshou (don't forget the scenic bike trip), Another day and night in Zhenyuan, quick jump to Chengdu (taste all the food there and visit the pandas),finally a day of rest and pampering in Shanghai. What a week! I wish I could go with you. Smile

I spent a lot of time working in Chengdu. It has pandas and a reputation for beautiful girls and relaxed people. Actually, the people have gone past relaxed to excessively lazy, and the new rich have taken all the beautiful girls back to the east coast. It used to be good, and is still OK, but there are much better places now, especially if you are going as a tourist.

Hong Kong and Shanghai are great places to visit. If you only have 7 days, put these at the top of your list.

I would go to Xi'an, visit the muslim quarter and then take a ride on vintage sidecar motorbikes from the 1930s in the countryside around Xi'an! it really worth-it! you could also go to Lijiang in Yunnan province.

If you have money to burn and shopping to do go to Hong Kong. If you want to go budget come to Xi'an. If you come to Xi'an you can get some new food that you may not find as much of in the other cities mentioned. You can also get the Terracotta warriors out of the way. Xi'an also has several other decent photo ops at ancient-style China sites. It'd make a decent photo album for memories.

Or you can go to Chengdu and HugAPanda. -_-

A:Going to HK would be the best bet I reckon, especially if you were looking for a church wedding. Chinese weddings are pretty grim IMO - you go to a barren govt dept with souless officials and navigate red tape so some guy can give you a red stamp and a marriage book. You get expensive pictures taken of you both posing in places you'd never go to in everyday life that is somehow supposed to represent your wedding, then a while later it's off to a restaurant where a game show host kind of guy makes sure it's as tacky as possible while the guests eat as fast as they can so they can leave as soon as they finish eating and gave you money. Hell, I'd go to Thailand or the Philippines and get married in Paradise.   -- Stiggs
