If you had the other chance for choosing before you came here, would you still choose China or some other countries? Please list your reasons whatever your choice is.
I choose my girl first. She was (is) in China.
I wouldn't do it any different second time.
Well i've got my kid now as a result of coming to China and settling down. My life before I did so? Drinking too much and not as happy. But the freedom to up and go where you please? Not easy to say goodbye to. If things had worked out different i'd have taken greater advantage of the freedom of an English teacher and traveled more. More of Asia. South America would have been nice, I could imagine settling there. China's fine though, it seems to suit me pretty well.
I never wanted to see places like England, too much the same as home and to me a city is a city is a city. I wanted to go someplace completely different. You are about to enter another dimension, a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind. A journey into a wondrous land of imagination. Next stop, the China Zone!
It was major dilemma for me; deciding whether to go back to Vietnam, where I had lived three years ago, or going to China to experience a new place and culture. China was the decision that made the most financial sense at the time (we were on lucrative contracts and it was my partner's first position, which he can now use to get a better job) but in hindsight it was absolutely the wrong decision. I'm back in Vietnam now, mistake fixed.
The reasons... well I don't want to be too offensive to the Chinese posters here.... the short version is that we had a terrible experience with the company we worked for and found it almost impossible to meet local people, the language and cultural barrier was insurmountable.
I find Hanoi a much easier place to live. Different stroked for different folks, though; I had to listen to a colleague whingeing about how difficult Viernam is, and how he missed the easy life of China and how much he liked the Chinese government. Me and the BF stared at him like he'd grown another head and the BF was only restrained from swearing at him by some pretty severe glaring on my part!
Yeah, I'd do it again... no serious complaints like others out there... though I'd have a greater understanding of where my life would take me (I wanted to head to Europe... not a smart decision in this economic environment...).
Interesting question. A life dilemma.
Well, my life motto is 'Avoid having regrets'. Therefore, I still do not regret coming to China. As a matter of fact, I believe I gained a lot by coming to China.
First of all, I found the love of my life, an amazing Chinese guy, nothing similar to the descriptions of a Chinese man most of you guys give in this forum.
Secondly, I am a teacher, which has been my dream since primary school. Even if not a native speaker I've always been appreciated by my colleagues and employers. I know what most of you think. In China anybody can be a teacher and bla bla bla. But I've always done my best and my education and passion when teaching have always been appreciated. Plus my students show me their love and respect every single day. I must admit that it's not easy considered the language barrier and teaching methods but there are a lot of willing and motivated people.
Thirdly, the situation in Europe sucks now. I have a really high education but most of employers found me overqualified or offered me incredibly underpaid positions or internships...All situations forcing me to live with my parents and save every single euro. No thanks! In China, I can chose and change a job. I can live independently and even help my parents if in need. I'm not making big money but much better than back home.
Not to mention the fact that learning a new language and culture can only enrich you. I'm a polyglot, speaking fluently three languages and some Spanish, I believe learning Chinese is just another way to keep alive and young.
I do not know what future holds and where am I going to end up but China is a good choice for now.
