Q: if you hate China, why still stay here?

i visited this website to learn English and i learned that a lot of you hate China, and post a lot of comments expressing your hatred for chinese and china, which sort of broke my heart, by the way. actually a lot of nitizens also discontent with the government, officials and dishonest businessmen, but in general we have family and friends here and we want to do our part to make china better. and my point is you guys have a choice, since you hate here, why you come to china the first place and why you still stay here after you recgonized what china and chinese really is?

I dont think that most hate it here in China. We have our good and bad days and sometimes the differences between the cultures are cool, otehr times, endearing and sometimes frustrating.  Since this is a website where expats gather, we will vent our frustration among ourselves. We get it out of our system, get sympathy from people who have experienced the same or worse, and then get back with our lives.
This helps us to NOT take it out on our students or others.  Many of the things that we "vent" on this expat website we would probably not tell friends back home, since for now, China is our home.
I sometimes have my "bad China day" where I get together with one of two expat buddies. We let it out of oour system and after a couple of beers all is right as rain. Yet we will be really angry back home if some ignoramus begins to sprout racist or derogatory things about China.
I am sure that the Foreign Affairs Officers who help us in the universities on occasion feel the need to get together and "vent" once in a while too. They get together, let out how much WE drive THEM crazy, how exasperating etc foreingers can be. Then, monday morining there they are with a smile. Venting is good and healthy. If not, it grows and grows and if left unchecked, you run the risk of becoming a Klingon.  Those ridges on their heads? Unreleased stress!wink

Hi Claire,

I think crimo and Raf have really given you a good answers but from my perspective I’ve been in China for 3 years and how can we share and explain the ''daily frustrations" (hence differences) to someone who is Chinese and may find it quite ''normal''.

I’m pretty sure that any expat who doesn’t like China won’t stay here for too long.

I think you'd also be surprised how many of the people who contribute to this forum will be 'pro-china' in many instances and stand up for china and the misinformed western opinions about China when they go back to their home countries.
