Q: If you suddenly became very rich...would you stay in China?

And why or why not?

Only if I could bring all my pets. I guess they are trying to get even, no visa for Chinese women to Canada, then no pets are allowed in.

No, no, and hell no. If a person has a lot of $ then they would probably want to stay in a place that they really enjoy being in. I do not really enjoy being in China.

If I had big $ I would own myself a small resort on Palawan.   angel

Yes, maybe if I found a way to live here legally without the money being in the mainland. I would ensure that is safely deposited in an offshore location and use enough to buy a nice little hideaway somewhere around Lijiang or Baoshan in Yunnan.

It's highly doubtful.  One of the [few] draws of staying here is the relatively low cost of living.  If I had untold sums of money...what would I care about the cost of living, when I could be much happier living elsewhere?

MondoRosa:

My sentiments exactly.

For me, China makes sense because it it provides a lifestyle where I only need to work a couple of hours a day. Expenses are very low and can quite easily buy what I wish.

If money was not an issue I'd be heading somewhere where nature rules. Plus, if it was truly a cultural kick I was craving then I would be looking outside of China given that China is generally pretty low on the "wow" scale.

Even rich Chinese people don't stay in China, why would I?

Exactly! A no-brainer.

Maybe, maybe not, I would buy the in-laws a nice place and set them up, then go on a World Cruise with my wife and daughter (and probably a Nanny) for 6 months and decide then where we are going to live permanently. I fancy Falklands or St Helena, but I doubt my wife would enjoy that amount of isolation, perhaps Cyprus would be a nice compromise. If we were to stay in China, maybe Hainan.

I would spend more time traveling between Asia and my hometown. In Asia, China would be my "headquarters" unless or until I found another place I like more.

I have gone back-and-forth on this issue in one way or the other.  In the end, no, not even rich, when the time comes, and it is coming, I will move on either Buenos Aires or to Uruguay or somewhere like that.

Very rich? Brasil or San Diego. China would rank low on my list of 'where to be very rich' because money doesn't go far here (I like cars) and I refuse to buy real estate here.

Probably not. Rather, I mean I'd probably keep a house here, but I wouldn't raise my kids in it. It'd be for my wife's family and for when we decide to visit.

I'd buy a house in Bangkok, find an easy job, and live a lazy life.

And once in a while go pay a visit to good ol' China.

I will get business class in airbus 380 the second day, go back to Czech, drink as much beer they will have left in the pub with all my friends, family and passerby. than enjoy 10 days in coma. After that, eat anything I like, set up the business dream i have and travel time by time all around the world. Buy some nice lovely vila with garden in homecountry and few flats for rent. did I forgot anything ?

Oh yeah. Invite all of you for weekend in Prague.

Not been to Prague, but have heard nothing but great things about the place!  Definitely on my "Places To Visit One Day" list.  Anyway... I like the fantasy question - sorta like, "What would you do if you won the mega-powerball lottery - where would you live?"

Well, lessee... I think I would go for authenticity in a place... a place that has charm, history, a great infrastructure, public services, and clean, clean, clean.  Maybe a thatch-roofed cottage in an English village (in Cheddar?) where I could ride my 3-speed Pashley bike to the local pub on the village green for a pint and a game of darts... Then a garden pied-a-terre in the south of France where I could mosey on down to the brasserie on the town square, sit under the warmth of a gas lamp heater, read my IHT, and enjoy a carafe of French red, a baguette, a plate of fois gras, and a wedge of Roquefort cheese served to me by Juliette Binoche in a low-cut chemise... Then, I'd fly off to meet one of my many exotic mistresses in Manhattan for a weekend on the town - a Broadway play, dinner on the Green, a stroll in Brooklyn... and return to Asia... But where in Asia?  China?  Hmmm... BJ - too polluted... Shanghai - too many money-driven crazies... China?  Dunno.  Don't really know the place.  Where are the undiscovered gems of China?  I can't think of any, can you?

NFW!   I could not keep dealing with the slow internet, censorship, and the growing number of racists here who really think they are patriots.  Its one thing to be proud of your country's achievements but things are getting out of hand when they start beating people for driving Japanese cars.  The day I win the Powerball, I am out of here!

TedDBayer:

I remember when it wasn't cool to drive a Japanese a cars is the US, late 70s, early 80s.

Any vacation I have ever been on, after 3 days I'm home sick. I've been this way my entire life, until I came to China. I never wanted to go home, just had to. I have a nice new home in the country, next to the lake. Now I'd like to travel more and I'm tied down with pets that I won't let go. I took early retirement and have enough income to do what I want, I just don't know what that is yet. I will come back to China, actually my plan was to come home for about 2 months, just can't go it yet. I'd like to see other all the asian countries. I also have to learn some restrain with spending. I'm think of Cuba or Dominican this winter. I can take my pets to the DR. I can see it now sitting on a beach with my dog and 6 cats. It would be a real vacation for them, just one big litter box.

No chance.

China just makes it hard to live. There are far too many hurdles to jump in order to do anything.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change student visa to labourer one is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
